Tried going with the A-10 but can't get all the schematics printed out and I also play a lot of different sims. This one is a little A-10 and a little general purpose. The seat cushoins are being made from the cushion foam of an old couch. Will be using a Thrustmaster Warthog, Saitek pedals, Track ir 4, a Leo Bodnar 12 bit controller with home made switches and dials. Just needed a home for the build.

This is the seat and mock up of different foam like the memory foam for the middle of the back

Messing around with fire extinguisher and made a new seat pan

Just adding the stick after some paint to the pedestal

Front and rear bulkhead is in position temporary jig

Front console mock up. Can't put anything down until the cushoins are made so I know where to put the pedals.
The floor will be replaced by a 4'x6' piece of wood so there wont be any gaps in the floor also.

Hoping to get some left and right consoles started tomorrow. Jigsaw got a little too hot to keep going tonight.

Hi Chappy that's a nice set up you've made, plenty of room for everything. Looking forward to the progress. Nice workshop too.

Thanks for the replies. I just moved to a new house and that is Mancave #1. It is a detached garage with all the trimmings one could need. I have a bedroom that will become Mancave#2/hanger where the pit will be once the room is set up. That's what is taking so long with updates. It's two builds at the same time and i'm sure no one wants to see pictures of the tile i'm putting down in mancave2 hahahah. I'll have some updates pretty soon though.

Update time

Got the throttle in

Seat and carpet for insulation. Seat cushions are almost done but in the house to keep them clean.

Using roof patch aluminum for skin. Kind of hrad to work with while it's still rolled tight but once it gets cut to size it's not so bad.

Still nothing is bolted down because i will have to take it all apart to get it upstairs to the "hanger".

Wrinkled but this side will be to the wall. I'm hoping to do better when it comes to the other side.
Floor is almost done upstairs so I think this might get finished off in the house soon. The forward console will get some controls but also switches for powering the PC and monitors up as well.

Update: Decided to try and skin it again.

Had to make a door since the knees don't like all the climbing anymore

Will be making a canopy and wrapping the monitor in something that might actually look like a front windshield when it's done.

Sorry for such blurry pictures, i'll try and hold the camera still next time also.

Maybe a layer of birch as a foundation for the aluminium would improve the skinning?

nice setup.

i love to build.

sorry to say that working on a pit center around 1, or 3 monitors is not worth the flight sim experience. maybe a dome.. but i dont have that kinda space.

oculus rift is my hope for the true flight experience not having to need projectors or monitors..

other than that,

GREAT work!
im in the process of building a comfy flight sim gaming chair..in preparation for the rift

I have to say nice work but kinda agree with Hannibal on the display aspect. Although its totally up to personal preference, I think not having a 46" monitor or projector really takes away from the experience. But again thats just my opinion and in no way is meant to take away from the great work you're doing. Thats the great thing about this hobby, you're building something to satisfy yourself so by all means do it the way you want to.

I've got a bad feeling about this.....

Jamf- Thanks for the idea. I'll be hitting home depot in a couple weeks for something flexible and more roof patch. the metal is pretty cheap but after it's had holes in it it is pretty much finished.

I would love to throw up a giant screen to play on. It is after all in the man cave. This is my 3rd or 4th pit. Maybe next month or the month after. They do seem to be getting better. The chair for me was getting frustrating. Started with an office chair then went to an ABC pit then more office chairs. Then tried to make an Aces seat. This one, the curves came out just right for the back. The cushion for the bottom came out right also. Can't feel the wood through
it like when i used foam from Joan Fabrics to make.

To me this is a few hobbies in one. I like playing the games, I like the history behind the planes and I love using my tools. Thanks for the replies and no offense taken on this stuff at all fellas!

Nice work Chappy! I can't tell, is the whole thing on casters? If so, that is a great idea! I wish I had done that to mine to simplify maintenance access. If it isn't... think about it. Whenever I do another pit (OMG... did I really just say that?!? duh), it will definitely be on casters.

Keep up the good work!

If you put something heavy on casters, either over-dimension the casters, or set things up so that it will be lifted on static feet while not being rolled around. Even good solid rubber will develop a flat spot over time

If the construction isn't too heavy and can be picked up on one end, the casters could be mounted to touch the ground and then move the pit around like a wheelbarrow:

I played around with this concept on the seat in the pit. It works... kind of... but then again I didn't put a lot of thought into the design.

I had originally played around with the idea of having powered jacks in each corner to lift it off the rollers, but it was turning into an expensive and complicated issue, so I chose the least path of resistance and just built the pit right on the floor. Being that it's tucked into a corner of the room, it makes getting to the other side of it a challenge. That's what I get for being lazy! goodnight

I went to hogpits and downloaded the A10 schematics and just made some changes once things were printed and I cut the pieces out and laid them on the wood. I knew to go big, go with wheels on the bottom, and make it in large pieces to be assembled in the room but able to come apart for later mods.
