I might be heading to Duxford for Flying Legends this year, with two students in the Cessna Corvalis. We'll be landing at Cambridge airport, but hotels seem to be booked full for the most part for the weekend. This is a bit of a last-minute thing, but has anyone got any suggestions as to where we could find a room? If not in Cambridge, then somewhere not too far away, and with the possibility to get to Duxford without a car. That is, by bus or any other means.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Crap, it won't be soon enough, but we're buying a house in the area right now. You'd be welcome next year (the place we are interested in is a 5 mins drive from the airport!)
There is as I remember a shuttle bus from Cambridge city centre: try this if not too pricey - the colleges have a bed and breakfast scheme out of term, check your PMs

Try all the B&B google will throw up for you matey, ive stayed in a few over the years and always been really nice. But leaving it late can be a nightmere for Legends as its the most popular show on the calendar and the entire area grinds to a holt over the weekend.

I'd also check out the Travel Lodge and Premier Inn hotel chains ohains within a 30 or 40km radius They are often cheaper than the B&Bs in my experience. My mate lives near Chelmsford NE of London and we drive up to Duxford from there. Traffic may be bad ......but you KNOW it will be worth it

Don't forget to try airbnb.com. It's a fantastic alternative to hotels and traditional Bed and Breakfast.

My wife and I stayed in Italy for two weeks and had whole apartments to ourselves for about $100 CAD/night. You could probably at least find a room near Duxford for a reasonable price.

Found a room at Holiday Inn Stansted. We'll be picked up by a friend of ours with a rental car, so that sorts out the transport. Sweet!

Pics will follow smile

Glad you got it sorted: leave early - arrive anytime past 8am or so and you'll be in a queue up the M11 for an hour...

We have a backup plan - the train from Stansted to Cambridge, and shuttle bus from there.

in the Cockpit of whatever I a...
take plan b! its better to go to Cambridge by train and then take the free shuttle bus to Duxford;
also, try to be there as soon as possible, the later you arrive, the longer the queue in front of the entrance will be;
concerning photo opportunities, there are plenty; the best are near the tank bank or near the other end of the opposite end of the area; depends on if you love shots of take offs or rather prefer shots of the birds while landing;
and go for the flightline walk-lots of great photo opportunities, many of them with reenactors smile

looking forward to seeing your pics then, I would have loved to head for Legends, but we have settled in for the Autumn Air Show in October instead to round up our airshow year;

cheers
phil

I'd go with plan B as well. No worries about road queues or parking....or having a couple of pints in the pub while there smile

Good luck semmern, as others have said arrive early, stupidly early. The popularity of the Duxford shows has skyrocketed in recent years. Last time I went to the Sept BOB show we turned around after being in traffic for 2 hours and not moving. Ended up going back the next day and getting there as gates open (also then had awesome parking spot to be naughty and sit on car roof to watch the show between USAAF and Ground warfare hall)
