I've read that Warthunder is currently working on Oculus Rift support. This feature could be a real boost for WT support especially if BOS and COD don't see that VR is the future of flight sims. An influx of simmers could motivate the developer to create more options/features that serious flight simmers prefer.

I think FRB players in WT has more serious problems than Oculus Rift support at the moment. Can not help but pay attention the mix which takes place in HB. winkngrin

Oculus Rift is an exciting project to follow. I do not know if it is properly assumed, that the 777 has been out and said that BOS will not support Rift, since it is too soon because of the stage of development Rift are in now.

However, very exciting, I must say.

With flight games I'd much rather use Track IR than the rift. I like to see my controls and feel the rift would feel heavy after a bit.

There haven't been to many complaints about the weight of the prototype developers kit from most users. Apparently the consumer version will be even lighter. I have most functions mapped to my HOTAS system, which I can easily acquire without looking. If more functions are needed I'll buy another button rotary bay thats orientated for easy use by feel. I'm very happy with my Track IR 5 but would drop it in a millisecond, for ten times the immersion using the Oculus Rift with its built in tracking. There are still problems the Oculus Rift prototypes, but it will be very interesting to see the final product.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. An 'influx' of simmers might be a few hundred people? Compared to the approx 30,000 arcade players online in WT at the busy times of day?

WT is a F2P game, which means its not free at all, unless you have the spare time of a 12 yr old on summer vacation. They are focused on monetizing it for all its worth. Rift support is just another marketing feather in their cap. Sure, we get a not so bad flight sim-lite to enjoy, but it will never be focused on us. Simmers are probably less than 1/1000th of the user base.

I'm having a blast playing it, all the same. When a high-res Rift comes out, i'm all over that. Just saw a video today about Oculus in WT actually:

"Can not help but pay attention the mix which takes place in HB."

If they were being too strict on the mix, during beta, it might never get out of beta and if it did, it would still be full of bugs.

Me too... OR sounds great.. but for a sim I need to see my sticks.. TIR gives me what I need.. I'd rather have a 42" screen and TIR than OR .. for now anyway.

You are discounting the immersion factor of only being able to see the game. Its pretty much a given that blocking out all other frames of reference will enhance immersion. Unless you've built an entirely enclosed cockpit that is completely dark except for your 42". Even then, the screen glow would illuminate things.

Also, the rift gives you stereo vision. Watch the video I posted, the guy just raves about how cool the water/sea floor is because of the depth.

Third, the 1 to 1 head movement of the rift is also important. Lag-free, 1to1 head movement sync'd to the simulation is a big part of what makes a head mounted display special.

For reference, I'm running 3x 42" LG's and trackIR. Its great, but I'd prefer the Oculus.

I think once the hi-res consumer version is available then everyone who values their experience in sims will want to jump to the good ship Oculus.
Where there is a need, there will be a solution. My opinion is that eventually either a small front facing camera will be built-in to allow you to toggle between reality and umm super-reality so you can 'interface' with family members bringing meals/drinks etc. or the screens will be mounted horizontally so that a LCD mirror can be used to either see forward or the screens via the mirror.
Either way, I guarantee that within 5 years most PC gamers and ALL console headset gamers will be in 3D heaven (or hell) via this type of equipment.
Make no mistake, this will be as big a revolution to gaming as say the original Atari VCS console in 1977 (yes I did get one for Christmas then and it was incredible).

I haven't spent a dime on WT and only fly FRB mode. It's not that bad for a completely FREE sim. The visuals are breathtaking and run well on older pcs, even if the maps are kinda small.

It's fun to just hop in and pick up and play with some friends for an hour or two who are a little less hardcore than me with flight sims.

Havent looked at WT for months. Can you jump straight in and buy/fly a Spitfire or Mustang yet, or do you have to grind your way through biplanes first?

You can buy and fly planes like the Spitfire. I think the Mustang can be bought too. But getting into a game seems much slower than IL2. In WT it can take minutes to join a game and as far as I can tell you don't get a choice of which server session you jump into. I think, say you want to play historical, there may be five or 10 'games' going on and you get in first come first serve when a game ends its time and starts over (like IL2 online from many servers through Hyperlobby). I prefer not to wait and I want to choose which game to get into. I may have this wrong. Someone correct me if I am off.

Another thing, the fm in full real is more real than in historical. Which bugs me because I don't care for being stuck in the cockpit only view but want full real fm.

Plus I am rather stupid when it comes to figuring out all this stuff about the maintenance and fixing the plane.
