Andy Murray takes the Wimbledon crown in straight sets.

We only had to wait 77 years.

A fantastic match, the last game was incredible, Andy played his heart out. And you couldn't have asked for a more gracious loser than Djokovic.

Amazing stuff! I was worried at the start of the third that it was going to be an anti-climax, but that last game was completely fitting for the occasion.

After Murray had climbed up to celebrate with his crew, I joked to my flatmate that it would be funny if he forgot his mum.

When all the fuss has died down it's important to remember the things which really matter: It's now 78 years since an Englishman won Wimbledon.

Congratulations! The way Murray fought back from 2 sets down in the quarter-final was impressive!

I don't think he would be happy with "Englishman", maybe British would be acceptable biggrin However is was a good match.

Umm, I could be misinterpreting, but I think the point is that
prior to this tourney it was 77 years since an Englishman had won,
thus "It's now 78 years since an Englishman won Wimbledon" means
it wasn't an englishman this year either.

So why doesn't Murray play under the Scottish flag then?

It's been an interesting Wimbledon this year, lots of controversy about slippy courts, players retiring injured and big names going out early on.

Did anyone see that bloody awful interview they did with Murray after the Quarters? Even the BBC tried to hide it it was so bad. And then the 'you will never be a looker' speech that came out of that goon John Inverdale's mouth about Bartoli.Where do they get these idiots from?

I felt the Women's final was a little bit of a let-down but in the end Bartoli did what she had to do to take her first Grand Slam title.Poor Lisiki,I felt for her,she never really got going, the occasion perhaps too much for her.

Can't wait until next year, hopefully Laura Robson will make it into the last 8,or maybe the quarters, who knows?

Because his nationality is British.

For the time being at least.

Have a look at the British Lawn Tennis site. I'm pretty sure the reason is that they don't recognise individual nations within the UK. As far as they're concerned we're all British. Fair enough !

Historically in this sport and others, if the winner was English he was an Englishman, If a Scot, Irish or welsh person won they were British.

That may change next year if we decide to vote for Independance, but who knows.

Cheers,

Andy

Which is all well and good, but a British Citizen won a Wimbledon Final in 1977, less than half the time since "the last time" those idiots are spouting?

Naunton Beauchamp Worcestershi...
He won, so he is British to the media here. If he lost he would have been described as Scottish.

I am not a fan or knowledgable regarding the game, but there seemed to be some spectacular returns and recoveries from him that maybe has put paid to the opinion that men's tennis is boring with few long rallies. It was also very hot. Well done I say.

What? The winner 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980 was Bjrn Borg, and he was - and still is - Swedish. I have found nothing that would indicate a dual citizenship.

Or did you refer to the women's final?

Edit: yup, Virginia Wade. So the media should have been more precise and refer to Murray as the first male winner since 1936?

The media be precise? They don't even care if the facts are correct dizzy

I watched Virginia Wade win that final, however I think it may be some years before another British woman gets their name on it.

Laura Robson might have a shot in the coming years. She's only 19.

At the moment she is our best hope, she just needs more experience and belief in herself.

Plenty of time,Wade was 31 when she won.

She needs to stay away from the German players, then. German athletes these days seem to collectively suffer from the same syndrome, which is to play brilliantly up until the finals: but always to lose in the finals. smile
