I am looking for some references (hopefully one volume) on the flanker line of aircraft (su-27, 34,etc..) I already have the World Air Power journal with the focus section on the Flanker, but would like something perhaps a little more modern and indepth. I am also looking for a book or hard print source with good info on Russian air launched weapons. Any help appreciated.

...and in this month's Combat Aircraft Magazine (ISSN 1367-8418) there's a 16 page special on the Flanker variants - preceded by a section on "Russian Air Power 2001"

Does anyone know if there was a strategy guide for Flanker 2? If so, is it any good (some guides are nothing more than reprinted information from the manual)?

As far as I know there is no strategy guide for Flanker 2. The Squadron Commander's edition of Su-27 Flanker 1.0/1.5 did contain a very good strategy guide, the contents of which can be applied to Flanker 2.0.
If you can get hold of a copy it is still worth buying. Graphics are as good looking as Breznev, but flight model and fighting are arguably still equal if not better than Flanker 2.0

The best book on the Flanker is without doubt the Air Fleet book "Su-27" by Andrei Fomin. I have about 10 various books on the Flanker etc, but Fomin's book is way ahead of all the others. There's pictures of a Ukrainian Sue at Belbek on the Crimea to boot! Check out Air Fleet's website: http://www.airfleet.ru or any UK aviation bookshop like Midland Counties or The Aviation Bookshop.

Killjoy,

Yeah, Tom basham wrote the Strategy guide. it is not only good for Flanker, but has good info on tactics for all fast jet sims.

Is it worth buying Squadron Commander's edition of Su-27 Flanker 1.0/1.5 just to get the strategy guide?

It has 150 missions, but I don't know of anything to convert them to the 2.0x versions. So I'd basically buy the game for the guide.

If you can find it for under 10$ US. Although the graphics are rather lacking, and there is no carrier operations, it is still a very good sim. BTW I got the Book reccomended by The Gremlin, and it is !VERY! good. Thanks Grem

Anyone read the Robert Shaw "Fighter Combat" book? I haven't had a chance to see it in person, so I'd be buying it blind. From the reviews I've read, it looks quite good.

Killjoy,

Shaw's book is excellent. The thing is that it is not a strategy guide, it is a text book! If you get it, show it to the next person who derides our hobby (obsession?!) as a "game".
172ndBodyBag, thank's for the link. It looks good enough to reccomend to my co-worker who runs our library's website to put under the aviation section which is a little sparce right now.(shameless plug

Ghost Bear,

Thanks for the info. I just ordered Shaw's book and look forward to reading through it. I knew that it wasn't a "light" book, but that's exactly what I was looking for!

Still waiting for the Gordon book to come in....
