Geez, what a way to go. Was an avid Stormchaser series watcher for years and these guys were always
on it. Sad they misjudged positioning with this Tornado.

This was a very difficult tornado to chase as the sudden left turn to the Northeast was masked by a rapid increase in the size (from 1/4 to 2.6 miles wide) of the El Reno tornado.

They obviously knew this was the one that was gonna get them. With that much experience behind them, they probably knew the exact "uh oh" moment.

I didn't read the link and made a very poor joke.

Sorry for being an ass.

Seen a lot of crazy stuff lately such as radio stations giving away 'Storm Chaser Vacations' like it was a cruise. Those were the type of folks I was thinking about.

Gotta agree with this.
Now, if the Jackass guys killed themselves... then we'd have a winner.

This is not a fair comparison since TwistX was a group of professional Storm Chasers who`s luck ran
out versus a complete moron with no ethical moral values goes out and kills himself and his girl.

As a First Responder and NWS Skywarn Storm Spotter, I feel for their loved ones, but would have to agree with Immermann's assessment. As a storm chaser these guys are mainly thrill seekers and are the type we have to worry most about. A bonafied storm spotter is out performing a service. Those storm chasers put themselves in precarious positions time after time to simply capture 'cool' video to post up on You Tube or to one of these stupid 'reality' shows.

The ones I am most sick of seeing on TV, though, are those idiots from the Weather Channel and local news people standing out in the middle of a hurricane making landfall. I keep waiting to see one of those goobers get decapitated on live TV by a piece of tin. I mean, give me a break! I know it's a hurricane! It's windy and raining. You don't have to stand out in it to show me. I hope the close call TWC's team had will cause them to be more cautious in the future so none of them get killed.

There is no doubt that a lot of storm chasers do it for the thrill, but Tim Samaras was dedicated to learning more about tornados and collecting data. And although I'm sure he got a huge adrenaline rush from his job, I certainly wouldn't put him in the category of being someone who did it just so he could post cool videos on Youtube. From the article:

Tim Samaras founded TWISTEX, the Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes Experiment, to help learn more about tornadoes and increase lead time for warnings, according to the official website.

In 2004, he told CNN that being near storms was part of the job.

"In order to get directly in the path, you have to be close," he said.

"Actually I'm pretty focused on our safety, certainly, and I'm focused on getting the data and getting the right spot," he said. "You only have one chance to do it."

Always found the "died doing what they loved" angle to be quite strange. Like it's okay to die so long as it's doing what you loved. I'm sure none of these guys screamed "I LOVE THIS" as their car was flung through the air and slammed into the ground. Or took solace in the fact they were never going to see their loved ones again simply because they were destroyed by a tornado.

I'm sure it was probably filled with a lot of explatives, cries for salvation form on high, and plenty of screaming of no communicative purpose.

Tornado's have been the same now for about 10million years. These guys and more have been chasing storms and what not for over 15 years now.

I don't know what else they can learn from this. They need to let it go.

Rather surprised at all the hate. People died doing their job.

Not all jobs are safe, and even those considered so can turn dangerous in a heartbeat.

Yes, I cannot fathon why so much hate for what they did for a living. Its ridiculous to think they are compared to
idiots who drink themselves to killing themselves. Tim and his son lived to help save lives from Tornadoes, yet so
many cut them down since they died doing their job. Grow up and face what you live for.

That was not the vehicle they died in, that was the weather Channel truck that was behind them. 4 were injured
in this truck, no deaths, saw Tim`s truck on the news tonight, and about puked, it looked like it went through
a meat grinder.

Here's a crazy vid of some chasers getting hit with debris, from 3 different cameras...so lucky they didn't get tossed (yes the passenger is very annoying)

Tim had been chasing storms for over 20 years.

With probes of his own design that he would place directly in the tornado’s path, he measured wind speeds and barometric pressure at the base of the storm, where such data are hardest to get. Another probe was equipped with video cameras capable of providing detailed imagery from inside the tornado cone.
Samaras's instruments offered the first-ever look at the inside of a tornado by using six radially placed high-resolution video cameras that offered complete 360-degree views. He also captured lightning strikes using ultra-high-speed photography with a camera he designed to 1 million frames per second

He contributed research to organizations like the American Meteorological Society and National Geographic.

“He was out there for the science and he was going to get that,” said Tony Laubach, a meteorologist and friend of Mr. Samaras. “He wanted to answer the questions people thought were impossible.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Samaras had expressed concern about the increase in amateur chasers on roads. Over the last decade, the number of chasers converging on the Great Plains for the start of tornado season has exploded, particularly in Oklahoma, where the first devilish wisps of a new tornado can cause traffic jams as chasers race into position. Some referred to the emergence of a “Twister” generation of chasers inspired by the 1996 movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as swashbuckling storm chasers in a pickup truck.

Tornado tourism is also on the rise, with several tour companies offering to bring paying guests into the churning heart of dangerous storms. At least one, called Extreme Chase Tours, allows guests as young as 12.
