I was interested in the events of the Iran-Iraq War so I purchased "Shield of the Prophet" from "GamersGate". The download speed was not a problem, roughly 250Kbs over +800Mbs. But what did I do wrong? I converted the download to a Core folder containing a Des.Addpack, a normal routine. However, the routine failed. I would not install no matter what I did or say to the "open" switch on the installer. What am I doing wrong. Of course, I am "assuming" this Graviteam DLC was written for SABOW.

Please advise....Over..........

The DLC is for Operation Star.

And it is not about Iran-Iraq.

Okay......It appears that I am completely fragmented. My next innocent question concerns access to the CORE folder. After downloading the update or scenario I am confronted by a GT2EXTENSION.FILE. How can this being converted into something usable?

it should be installed by Game Updater, I supposed.

Anyway, I think Graviteam should supply a download tool whose size is about several hundred KBs, so as to improve the download speed and support HTTP.

I haven't downloaded it successfully.

I am not sure wtf is going on with gamersgate and the download speeds right now. Much slower than anything else from them I have ever seen. Combined with their new practice of compressing everything down in a .rar file.......well yuck. Issues are popping up everywhere. Not so good at all. Causing LOTS of confusion all around.

And yes FOR APOS/GTOS not SABOW. Although it will install into sabow....I did by mistake LOL. But not going to run. THe base game engine is the same but is different.

I thank you for all your comments. Yes, I am NOW trying to install the DLC into "Operation Star". I am also tripling my effort by attempting to reinstall "Operation HOOPER" and the graphics enhancement of late 2012. Each attempt comes up with a GT2Extension.file. I have now gone back to GamersGate fearing that the problem might be on their end and irreperable. Where else are these DLCs available for download given the "speed" and output being provided by GamersGate?

Just Downloaded prophet shield off of gamersgate. Ok, so it is now packed up as a RAR file. SO NOW you do have to unpack the file somewhere where you remember where you stuck it. Then run updater, find the file with its gt2 extention. NO NOT RENAME or anything wacky. Just load it up in the games updater....save and play...all of that stuff now applies AGAIN. Man these changes back and forth are going to cause so many problems. Now.....if it does NOT run it means it needs either the newest V5.81 engine update OR is missing the silly microsoft VC library it needs.

Now I am going to see what mayhem the actual game patch is off Gamersgate.

OMG what a total cluster of confusion. Ok the 5.81 patch part seems to be fine. Although a newer one I think is going to get uplaoded into gamergate or something. (whatever....do not worry about that one yet). The patch march 13eng is still the old zip file. ON this part you do not need to unpack or rename. Use the drop down menu in the updater to scroll to zip file type from gt2 file type.

Ok so now this HAS become confusion due to 3 different ways files are coming off of gamersgate. This needs to be addressed quickly. But they all SHOULD work, just in different formats to confuse folks. Hopefully Graviteam and gamersgate get this streamlined FAST. People not familiar to the patching process will be even MORE confused due to all this nonsense.

I thank you FlashBurn for the rapid as well as direct response. By reading your response, I realized I was complicating the issue. So I decided not to "FWI" and transplanted the GT2Extension file into the Core and ran UPDATE. "Hooper" and "The Prophet" are now available campaigns.

Thank you again

5555??

Hmm...what you do is run the GTOS 581 core update first..then boot up GTOS (or go into the main game folder and find the update file and click it) and click update..then when the update screen come sup you cick install and then find the ext file and click OK..it will then install it..just putting it into the core folder will cause issues I'm certain.

Well, I do not understand what is the trouble.
  1. To have a bit less problems install the game NOT in Program Files (on system drive, for example D:\Program Files is OK). Program Files could be used too, but this requires additional steps, knowledge, and such. If all you want is just to play the game, do not fight the stupid OS, just do not mess with Program Files.
  2. If you have Windows Update disabled, install vcredist from docs\support\redists. Or better just enable the Update (and install all of the updates then).
  3. Check DirectX is the latest (June 2010 currently). Just in case, Windows 7, or whatever do not have the latest by default. Even though they say they have DX 10 installed, this does not include DX 9!
  4. Turn off antivirus (they are stupid troublemakers).
  5. Install the latest game core update. Check (and double-check) that you install it in the right folder (i.e. Program Files (x86) vs. Program Files, etc.).
  6. Install the patch and DLC(s).

Installing the patch or DLC.
  1. Run the game update utility.
  2. Press Install.
  3. Now, if you have an RAR-archive, unpack it. If it is ZIP, try the next step at first, if it will not work, unpack the archive, and do the old format stuff.
  4. What is the file extension of the patch/DLC? Select it in the file browser window (lower bottom combo box):
    • "Addons (packed) *.gt2extension" is selected by default and is the default format of Gravi patches and DLCs.
    • "ZIP-archive *.zip" you can guess what it is.
    • "Addons *.addpack" is the old format, where you need to extract the patch/DLC in a temporary folder, and browse update utility into CORE folder, selecting desc.addpack file. All of the current patches/DLCs do NOT use this system anymore! If you are extracting the CORE folder, you are doing it wrong!

Little troubleshooting.
If the game core update installs normally, but the game update utility does not start automatically (something pops up and closes immediately), and the game does not start (again something pops up and closes), you either:
  1. Installed the core update in the wrong folder (I've told, double-check).
  2. Do not have vcredist installed (blame Microsoft, user friendly software company).
  3. It is Windows Vista, or 7, and you have some crazy weird stuff (by default) with user access rights in Program Files folder (Microsoft again). Verify that C:\Users\<Your user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore folder (AppData folder is hidden by the way) does not have the game folder in it. If it is there, delete it! And reinstall the game outside of Program Files.
  4. It is Windows 8. I don't know why you are using that piece of software.
  5. Your favorite mighty the best and bla-bla-bla antivirus is blocking something it should not block, again.
  6. Sometimes reboot helps. But do not think it is a miracle, biggrin you probably just had installed something (like vcredist), but some files were blocked, so they will be updated after reboot.

If the game still does not run, check item 4, I know some people have thought they disabled the antivirus, but on the second look it was running still.
If the game still does not run, well... I'll be polite, and will not tell anything about you. mycomputer smile

I appreciate that you seem to have it all under control Krabb, but I have never seen a game series generate so many requests for help, especially patching.

I am trying to think of any other game I have owned that uses such a convoluted system and I can't.

Like Magnum,I gave up with the game.

Even when I did manage to patch it ok,quite often the game would not run, requiring me to do a clean install to fix it.

It's a little difficult to master at first but not as hard as some here claim it is.
I guess the dedication just isn't there for some players.

Well, look at the bright side. There is always Combat Mission if you still want to play a tactical WW2 wargame.
This is the better game though,so I do understand and feel your pain.

I saw the same amount of requests for Crusader Kings 2 (and maybe more, this is mainstream game) for example (mostly vcredist stupidity again). And right, I didn't have problems with it either. Looks like anything that requires more than telepathic control is very hard to figure out. biggrin

If you have patched it, it started fine, and then stopped working, it could be VirtualStore stuff (item 3 in the list), or antivirus. Both problems are not related to the game itself. But I guess you don't want to troubleshoot it.

That's great, you guys fiquered it out... point is, in today's gaming market, this is terrible... no reason for not having a easy install exe or update program... Sure I have it fiquered out, installed and updated... but the point is, every-time something new comes out or a new update, same crap... in my limited gaming time, I prefer to play the games i buy, not spend my time getting them working.

Well, if you know how to install patch, there will be no problems afterwards. Program Files weird stuff is one time problem, vcredist - again one time problem, antivirus... it is your problem, not someone else. biggrin So, in the end you just install the core update (relatively rarely) and the patch. That's it.

And on the patch installation, with the latest gt2extension system you just select it and it installs. The previous system with all that unpacking was not much more difficult, just additional step - unpack the archive.

What are the problems after each update? I just don't understand, if you install vcredist and such, everything is smooth. Of course if you have a mess on your computer then this is another story, some "convinient" one button magic updaters give a habit to make mess. biggrin

I don't know why you bother torturing yourself with this game if you have such a limited gaming schedule and most of it is spent wrestling with the updates and patches.

I personally am not experiencing that problem to the level or degree of frustration you seem to be having. For every 100 hours or so I've spent playing this game I think I spent 1 minute patching or updating.Minor annoyance at best.

I like the fact that this game is constantly being improved and updated while adding a bunch of new content that is exploring other areas and eras of conflict.

This game has evolved immensely over the past year and keeps getting better and better. For me the annoyance fee of learning the update process is small change compared to the larger enjoyment factor payoff I receive in the end.

I've come to the conclusion that with this game there are going to be some players that are never going to be happy regardless of how the game is presented and will always find something to complain about. But,if you are going to come into the forum constantly complaining and saying you are done with this game and do nothing but look for faults in the game then I don't know why you should expect anyone to keep trying to help you or even bother responding to your complaints.

Please ease up a bit there on Magnum Dane49. Besides being a very good (ex) moderator and advocate of this genre, he was also very instrumental in helping us get a Graviteam subform here on SimHQ.

While I have no issues with Graviteams patching/updates either some people do, and it never hurts any company to look at customer issues some people are having and see if there is any room for improvement.
cheers
