PFunk, I'm sorry to see such devastation. Your town will be in my prayers.

Make sure you're taking care of yourself while you are rendering aid and assistance. They need you to stay healthy while y'all work through this.

Didn't realize you were so close to that. Must be horrible to see IRL.
Yeah, do what you can, but stay safe.
Won't help anyone, to become another casualty, that should always be in front in your mind.
Do no harm.
Help if you can.
And get out of the way if you can't.

I grew up in Waco and still have lots of family scattered all over. Still waiting to hear if any of them settled around West. Hang in there Pfunk, we're all with ya and everyone in the greater northern Waco region...

Dang, that was a big explosion. Kind of reminds me of that ship that blew up in Galvaston, TX (I think) back in the 40's. Be careful PFunk. My thoughts are with you.

I doubt it was the nitrate fertilizer that caused the explosion. Most likely a large storage tank for anhydrous ammonia, like this:

http://www.bizrice.com/upload/20120130/Lin_Lar_Lox_Lng_Cryogenic_Transport_Tanks.jpg

A fire of any kind close to one of these tanks can cause a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl-JgyQA7u0

Firefighters are trained to watch for signs of BLEVE, but with a tank in a populated area, they were probably trying to buy time for people to evacuate the area. I've seen a five gallon propane bottle BLEVE and you would be amazed how powerful a tank that small can be. A tank that holds several thousand gallons would likely be on the scale of a small nuclear detonation.
