Last time at a lower Altitude it was 13:45. I've slacked on running at this altitude because I hate the weather, but I ran a 15 with a bloody toe.
EDIT: Doh, that was a 2 mile. We don't time one mile runs.

The world record marathon time is 2:03:38, which works out to an average of 4:40 per mile. The world record for the mile is 3:43, and the 4:09 time was broken back in 1931, so by the time the early 80s came around it was a glacial pace LOL My sister has done a few marathons and runs them in about six-hours (she's 55). Which means her marathon miles are about the same time as my "exercise" miles. I have a nice course, four-miles as per Google Earth, takes me up and down some repectable hills, over broken roads and trails, and to do it at 13 to 14 minutes a mile requires some small effort. At least from me. Running is not an option for me. With the damage I've done to my knees, I'm delighted just to be able to go for a good walk.
Question everything!

No idea on the mile, but I just got back in from a run; 18.3km. Just to burn off some of the extra goodies from Christmas and Easter. 1 hour, 41 minutes.

For Army PT tests I was running 2 miles in 13:08. That was in uniform and after doing 72 push-ups and 78 sit-ups. That's about a half minute better than me.

There was a time when I was a high-speed low-drag STRAC soldier. Now, not so much.

It was some where in the 6 min mark, the track coach who was also my gym teacher wanted me to try out for the track team but it wasn't my cup of tea. Even in my 20's when I ran I would run w/2 guys who ran distance and they used me like a rabbit to set the pace.
Problem was I could never run further than 7-8 miles...

Most had a set of "PT" boots that were well broken in. Lots sandpapered the insides to remove a lot of the leather to soften and lighten them. Really broke them in so they were more flexible. Some even drilled holes trough the soles to get rid of a little more weight and make a better cushion in the heel. But they were still boots. Not the athletic shoes that are worn now. Try it in boots some time.

Try it in boots some time. No thanks, running from the company to the airfield in jump school was bad enough. No jungle boots allowed then, either, but the old 'cruit boots (not the big heavy speed-lace ones from the late 80s) weren't too bad.

About a 9 minute mile, that's pretty darn good! This was a relatively sedate tempo for me, to burn fat in addition to carbs. Been running a lot over the past couple of months. I used to do track & field until I turned 20, and over the last couple of years (I'm 27 now) I got really horribly unfit. Didn't gain much weight at all, just 10 lbs or so, but all of my endurance went down the drain. In January I decided to do something about it, and started doing long runs regularly. Have now lost 5 lbs and improved my time over an 8.5km course from 58 minutes to low 41s, since my first run this year, which was on Jan 7th.

*snip* . Try it in boots some time. You win. I averaged 6-7 minute miles when I was competing in college running fairly hilly terrain. But we were fighters, not serious runners. *shrug*

My last 2 years of high school, I ran Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. In N.Y. state, Cross Country is in the fall, so it can provide a good endurance base for middle-distance and distance runners during the subsequent track seasons. During my junior year, the coach usually had me running the mile, and often times doubling by doing one of the 1/2 mile legs of the 2 mile relay (4 x 1/2mi.) As I recall, my best official mile time that year was 4:42. (If you looked at me now, you might be inclined to ask if that was in hours in minutes...). My senior year, the track coach had me doubling the 1/2 mile event, and a leg in the 2 mile relay... so I never had an official time for the mile that year. Based on mile times ran in practice, and projection from my official 1/2 mile times, I probably would have clocked a 4:20, and possibly even as low as 4:16, if I had just done a mile event in one meet that year. My main focus that year however, was the success of our 2 mile relay team. The 1/2 mile event was about half way though the meet schedule, and the 2 Mile relay was at the end, which usually led me to hold something back in the 1/2 mile event. We had a very good 2 mile relay team, of which I was only the 3rd fastest. The top dog was this guy: Don PaigeFeel free to google him if you're at all interested, as there are plenty of articles. Don was a dominant runner in high school, going on to double and win both the outdoor 800m and 1500m events at the state championship his senior year. He went on to have a successful college running career at Villanova. He would have represented the U.S.A. at the Olympics in Moscow in the 800m, but then Jimmy F'n Carter had other ideas. Don, being a better person than I am, is not bitter about that. That's OK though... I'm still bitter about it, for him... so I guess he doesn't need to be. ---------------------------------------------- All that being said... spending a lot of time of the track / road to prepare for meets is one thing. But folks turning in military P.T. runs like what was posted earlier... where they have to spend most of their time doing other things to prepare for possible events that *really* matter... Now that is impressive!

I ran cross country and track and field while in high school. I specialized in middle distance, 800m and 1500m. If I recall correctly, my 800m time was 2:08 and my 1500m was 4:25. Note that the 1500m is not a true mile. It's about 150m short. Can't run like that anymore, obviously.

Can't remember the exact time but it was around five minutes. I could run when I was younger. My best PT run, at 18, was two miles in 10:18. I was running a fair amount then. When I retired 20 years later I still did my 2 miles in around 15:30. And I was pushing 200 lbs.
Not sure I could run a mile now. My knees are giving me a lot of trouble. Too much running in boots.
