Which comand should I use for attacking e.g. a hidden AT-gun with a mortar in a halftrack. I don't want it to go there directly but to stay as far as possible away and attack it with the mortar as soon as it's in sight and in range. Is "attack" and right-click on the gun the right comand or "asault" or do I have to find a good spot myself, move it there and then designate target? Can I use a forward observer for direction of fire, for example the infantry in halftrack when it left it?

Find mortars platoon leader.......... Use the crosshair icon to fire off suppressive fire sort of deal. Mortars will enage area...... Usually REALLY well. If platoon leader or arty direction guys are KIA/WIA your out of luck. You will HAVE to get mortar carrier in LOS of target. ONce they spot they will automatically fire off mortar hell. If playing newer betas of APOS/GTOS they may also fire off on their own without LOS is commander has LOS. Which is pretty cool.....
This ALSO works with any other weapon capable of indirect fire.......IE HOWITzers..... AT guns NO idea, never tried but I do not think they will. OR just end up shooting up an empty hill or something. Those little infantry guns everyone has.........they rock at indirect fire. REAL pocket arty.
thanks a lot. So if the platoon-leader is not nearby, I can use "Attack", klick on the enemy AT-Gun and my halftrack will stop as soon as he has line of sight and use the mortar? Can I force the PT-comander out of his halftrack to get better hidden LOS on the Target - propably not? What is the difference between attack and assault?

That's one thing I haven't figured out completely. How does that cross hair icon work? If I RMB click on a target does that then become the priority target for the selected unit? Is there only one priority target at a time or can I line them up with successive mouse clicks?
It seems weird the first time you do it, but you get used to the procedure. Basically, you first halt your mortar platoon if they were moving. Select the commander and click the button on the dashboard with the three bullets. Now click the area you want raped. watch, rinse, and repeat as needed
THE COMMAND/FIRE DIRECTION GUYS ON THE GROUND IN FORWARD POS
There doing commo stuff...ok for the heck of it. But note the smoke flare thing.... They be talking...
BOMB falling from sky icon is what you want. IF they have LOS or just fire command of multiple targets...thats whe you want to use the fire priordity. But that DOES NOT mean your soilders will listen to you. They will take it under advisement and do what thy think is best NOT to get killed. AS per soidlers the world over once the metal hits the meat.
MY there are BIG biting bugs here
M3a1 crew says lets get the FOOK out of the kill zone.
Thanks for the explanation. One more question: what is the best approach when the comander is not available for half-track mortars. Can I use "attack" (or assault) order for an area where i see an enemy and then the half-track will stop as soon as the area is in sight and starts bombing it, or do I have to find spot where he has LOS, order move comand and then use the crosshair and hope he will obey my target selection?

For the March patch's automatic indirect fire control to work, you might need to turn on the AI mode (the icon with the eye on the lower right panel) on the selected artillery pieces.
