Saw most of this last night. Easily one of the worst big budget movies I have ever had the misfortune of watching. Battlefield Earth bad. And from the pen of Joss Whedon, no less. I'd be curious to know what things happened behind the scenes to make this movie as awful as it was. And the writing sucked, so unless someone rewrote it after Joss, I'd say he wrote a turkey.

No one is perfect, including Joss Whedon.
No way is Alien: Resurrection as bad as Battlefield Earth but it is certainly not by any means in the same league as Alien or Aliens. IMHO, what made the film disappointing is that it just seemed a bit "odd" and eccentric and that was probably due to the fact that it was directed by a French director. The European art house sensibilities just didn't work in this case. The overall story was stupid, some of the characters were just terrible and fell flat on screen (I'm looking at you Winona) and the film had an awkward combination of seriousness and comedy.
The only thing that is really memorable for me about the film are the performances by Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif.

In comparison to prometheus, resurection was a masterpeice.
Fighterops...
The only TRUE Stealth crowd funded game.
Devs said there was stuff there, but you just couldn't see it.
Weird,I think it's great. I only watched it last week, probably the 4th or 5th time I've seen it. Perlman as usual was great.
Panzer is right,I don't think it's as bad as Battlefield Earth. That is in a league of its own (along with Battleship and Battle Los Angeles, both of which I had to turn off).

I managed to get about an hour into Battlefield Earth before I stopped the dvd. I felt like I was having the brain matter sucked out of my head while I was watching.

I think I've largely blocked that one from memory. Have to say BE was worse though, any movie with Travolta in his "I want to play smug bad guys" phase were pretty horrible.

I don't remember anything about Battlefield Earth, but that was because I did watch it until the end, and suffered permanent brain injury. Should have pulled out early like Panzer did...

I think they tried too hard to convince us in Resurrection that our 2 species really weren't that far apart. (Weaver's character being real aggressive and the alien hibrid being so cruel), but battlefield earth was in a realm all its own.
I will say that I made it to the end of BE. A feat I can't claim with Iron Sky...that piece of crap was on til the black astronaut did the LarryMoeCurly move on the Germans. Horrible.
I had the same feeling of "wtf am I watching, this is a complete turkey" while watching Alien Resurrection as I did with Battlefield Earth, so from a viewing POV, they are in the same wretched class of stinker. I was just surprised to see an Alien movie suck so much.

Somebody mentioned Ron Perlman being one of the saving points, and I do love me some Ron Perlman, but I think he was one of the many caricature-ish actors that made it impossible for Resurrection to fit the mold of the previous films. You know what I mean? All these cartoon character chins and eyebrows and dreadlocks and bug-eyes and... the list goes on. Bad guy from the Crow. President of Val Verde from Commando.
Compare to Alien or Aliens... Alien had a believable crew. They look exactly like they'd be doing the jobs they do in the movie. Aliens had some pretty believable Marines. Hell, Apone was a Marine in real life. (If I remember correctly... not Army... maybe someone can correct me on that).
But if you want a movie I've done my best to forget entirely... Alien 3. And the original plan was for it to be a wooden space monastery. Just... just facepalm.

Correct, the actor who played Apone was a real USMC sergeant who served during Vietnam.
As for Alien 3, watch the extended recut version. It's a huge improvement IMHO.

Screenwriter Joss Whedon was unhappy with the final product. When asked in 2005 how the film differed from the script he had written, Whedon responded: "It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines...mostly...but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then theyd changed the script...but it wasnt so much that theyd changed the script; its that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable."

Wow, that's a great quote from Whedon and it goes to show just how much of what can make or break a film is the execution.

No idea but I do know that she was initially not interested in being in another Alien movie until Fox decided to throw a crapload of money her way.
