Yep. Kramer's right. Always use the torrent - it's massively quicker.
You'll want to grab the uTorrent client if you don't already have it.

You have to install a torrent client, uTorrent (->google) that Kramer mentioned is good. Once the client is installed you just need to download the (smallish) torrent file, open it and the torrent client will start up and start downloading the whole file.
BTW I've mostly used the standard HTTP/FTP servers and never had problems with them, always downloaded with pretty much my max DSL speed.

One warning about Torrents though; it's a peer-to-peer file sharing network. Large files are broken down into packets and automatically combined once everything is downloaded. However, as soon as you have received a few packets on your computer, these can be uploaded to other users. Unless your data plan is unlimited, torrent may not be the best option.
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I've never used torrents before and don't know how they work. The basic idea is that instead of downloading one MASSIVE file from a single bandwidth-limited source, you download the file in hundreds or thousands of tiny pieces from lots of sources (i.e. other downloaders). What's cool about torrents is that they work the opposite way from traditional downloads. In other words, the more people are downloading a file, the faster your own download speeds will be because the torrent is grabbing the data it needs from loads of different sources. That's probably a bit too simplistic an explanation for the more techy types, but it's close enough. EDIT - Legend's observation is a good one, but it's only the amount of data you're uploading that's (potentially) an issue. You can very easily set uTorrent to limit the amount of data you upload, though. It kind of goes against the spirit of torrents, but the option's there for you if you want it.

Torrent All four distributive files can be downloaded at once via BitTorrent protocol (wikipedia article). The torrent file is at the bottom of the mirror list page (direct link to file). Most web browsers don't support BitTirrent protocol, so this guide is for a regular version (not lite) of open source Free Download Manager (the FDM): http://freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm Once you have FDM installed and running: 1. Get the link to the torrent file (right-click on the link and select save link address). 2. In the FDM window select "Torrent" tab. 3. In the FDM toolbar push the leftmost button "Add torrent download from web". An "Add download" dialog window will pop up: paste the link into the "URL" field (if it isn't there already); choose where to save the file in "Save to folder" item; finally press "OK" to confirm. 4. A download record will appear and downloading will start immediately. 5. To find out where the files were downloaded use "open folder" item in right-click menu (right-click on the download record in FDM).

I tried the normal download from DCS and it just never seems to go anywhere and says 12 hours. I know 1+ gig is alot but I should think I should see some files immediately downloading instead of just hanging. I am on the same 12+ hour download time - on a DSL connection. Do use a torrent - I went with uTorrent. When you download the torrent 'seed' you may have to drag that file into a uTorrent window for it to start. We are expecting a program upgrade soon, so you may be d/l'ing another big file(s) soon - good time to install a torrent package. WC

I found that having a d/l manager program installed on your comp also significantly reduces d/l time. As it simultaneousiy d/l's different areas of the program , as oposed to start to finish.

Thanks for all the help. Are torrents safe? Sounds creepy that I'm "sharing" other's connection and they mine to download files...... Yep. It's 100% safe. I had the same reservations and caution when I first started using torrents about 8 or 9 years ago. Never had any problems with them whatsoever.

Torrents are not as fast as a "fast" site, but are faster than a "slow" site.
I honestly don't recall how long it took me to grab DCS world and the modules.

I'm sure it took me no longer than about 3-4 hours to download World plus the A-10c module. Thats using torrent , plus a download manager. Maybe I was seeding off a lot of other people at the time as well ?

Another pro for torrents: you can stop downloading any time (eg turning off your pc) and start where you left off. With normal dls off the ftp server it has to happen in one go.
