Hi everyone; long time no post...
I am trying to install Windows 8 Pro on my home server. This system runs RAID 1 and functions as the family file repository, and also drives a 21" touchscreen monitor in our kitchen. The monitor is a dual-input device that we also use to watch TV. My initial intent when installing it was that it would be equally useful for TV as it would as a computer (for example, accessing Google calendar, looking up recipes and having them on-screen in the kitchen while cooking, etc.). However, the previous OS was Windows XP and the touchscreen capabilities are pretty limited on that OS, so we found that we hardly ever used the computer input on the monitor. I hope that with Windows 8 and the interface designed for use with touchscreens, installing Windows 8 will make a reality of what I had envisioned in the first place.
The problem I'm having is that once I install the OS and I get to the first setup screen (where it says "let's go through a few basics") the screen flickers and garbles for a few seconds and then the monitor goes into standby. The power remains on but nothing happens. If I reboot this same process repeats endlessly.
I've put together a mashup of old hardware for this, so it may be an incompatibility somewhere. Here's what I'm using:
Asus P5K Pro motherboard
E7200 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU
4GB DDR2 PC8500 RAM
GeForce 6200LE GPU
2 x Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM HDDs in RAID 1 on ICHR9 northbridge native Intel RAID
LG 22x DVD+/-R optical drive
Raidmax 350W PSU
Windows 8 seems to recognize the RAID array natively, which is good. The only thing I can think of is that this is a PSU problem. Aside from the fact that this PSU is complete garbage, it only has a 20-pin ATX connector while the motherboard has a 24-pin receptacle. I used to run this motherboard with a power-hungry powerful GPU, and I would never even consider running a power desktop system with this POS power supply and/or only a 20-pin ATX connector. I figured if the system would PSOT and boot with the 20-pin connector in this case, though, it would probably be fine.
I have a real power supply in my desktop system that I could use, although it might be a major hassle. Is it worth trying that or does anyone else have other ideas about what could be going wrong with this Windows 8 install?
