You'd have squad leads to determine the best course of action within platoon leads orders and fireteam leads from those of the squad leads.
I think that a single platoon lead above the squad leads is important though, giving the overall plan and orders. He can gain opinions from his squad leads but I always think that final decisions are best made from one person. Democracies don't tend work on a battlefield.
as to SLs, i dont think its to many for 1 person to keep track off, whats important is good, clear comms and everyone knowning what there supposed to be doing, and what team there in
