They are going for a combined air - land - sea game with a World of Tank business system (xp and level grind, micro transactions etc). It's ambitious, but I would rather see them deliver a great flight simulation experience first - there's already a huge number of planes for them to model, and many need their flight models done or fixed, and I'm not sure have dozens and dozens of tanks and boats is going to help us in term of simulation fidelity and content variety (my hopes for a better coop and single player experience is diminishing when I see these developments which will surely take them all of their time to develop).
As the the armor and other land vehicles are AI when one is flying, when one would be in an armored vehicle the planes would be flown by AI. There is not enough members connected at the same time to recreate an original battle in which all vehicles would be only manned by humans. The flight model, graphics and map seem similar to IL-2.

This is not the bars that keep the Tiger in the cage, this is the space between the bars.
Liking the look of the tanks, War Thunder is one of my favorite games, although I'm not a tank nut this would strengthen that love even more.

It's quite likely that they have different people working on the different sections, i.e the same people are still working on planes, while others are now working on the tanks and others on the boats. So they will still be working on fleshing out and perfecting the air even while these tanks are being developed.
Looking forward to seeing how they combine them, even more so to doing strafing runs of real players
Well, I don't know when we will see armor manned by human. The Plane MMO, eventhaugh is good, is still in its infancy. A lot needs to be completed unless it is just another Arcade game. The Historical Battles part needs to be sorted out and some flight physics have to be perfected. I think that once the plane part is completed, they will move toward the armor part. Any other way would be very disapointing.

Ground Units will come this year. Recently we’ve published a Teaser, which means that soon we are going to provide more information for the upcoming Ground Forces. As for the frequently asked question, how all this is going to look , surely we will make combats for both airplanes and ground units controlled by the players on the same map, but still we will provide the opportunities for our players to take part in airplane-only or ground-force-only games. The tab “army” will be available then, with its own tech trees and so on. Yet I cannot tell anything about certain ground unit classes, there is a huge amount of gameplay, that we are still testing. Classic tanks will surely be introduced, but concerning the other types of ground units I can not tell now – it is all being tested for now. And we are working hard on the Fleet issue, but for now the priority is Ground Forces. We are making models and tech trees for the ships, and we had showed the screenshots of the ships already, but for now we are mostly focused on the ground forces. Ships are going to come later, that I can tell
War Thunder proudly presents first screenshots for the upcoming in-game tanks!
We are working hard so production of tanks and locations is at a very high rate now and constantly increasing. And since we have a separate team designing tanks — planes production is not going to slow down.
We would like to introduce the legendary tanks of WW2: Sherman М4А2 and Panzerkampfwagen VI «Tiger I».
Please be noted that the work is in progress and these early screenshots do not reflect the final quality.
Maybe the War Thunder Tiger will be more Tiger-ey and fierce compared to the World of Tanks Tiger, which is a giant xp turkey for the enemy to riddle full of holes in it's tissue paper armour. The screenshots above certainly look nice.
Also, never ever start playing World of Tanks. Seriously, don't start. Do yourself a favour. It's ok-ish, but unless you're some kind of demi-god when it comes to controlling your own frustration levels, don't do it. Fire an awesome gun into the paper Hellcat front plate? - 'that one bounced!' What!?!? Encounter enemy T49 in your Stug - instantly get tracked by his first shot as he flies by you (always). At least they sort of cured your bullets coming sideways out your barrel in the 8.6 update now, one of my pet hates.
Some more WOT pain - not to be taken too seriously, but if you've played you may smile Crazy grindfest Horrible, horrible stock tanks, associated with the above 'They dinged us!' What? Didn't I just ding them? Arty rain-o-doom. Crazy fast scouts that fly all over the map, aka AMX ELC, Pz1C. Bastards. World-o-Russian tank bias (hint - go for the KV1-Sport, grind the 122mm!) Random number Trolling - catch fire at the worst time ever, crazy bounce mechanics, low/no hit damages Odd sight behaviour, swinging gun up to the moon as you unzoom sometimes Some very odd nerf/buff decisions Until you get used to it, very strange visibility system (you don't 'see' what you actually 'see', you 'see' what the visibility system lets you 'see' to incorporate camoflage/nets etc) And of course, totally random team mates who may be just as happy to drive off a cliff after accidentally teamkilling you as shoot the enemy!
WoT is an awesome game, the tanks aren't modelled to have parameters as its real counterparts, but "adjusted" for gameplay reasons (WoT is far away from being a Steel Beasts Online lol), the map is small and the visibility system dynamics is a nice gameplay compromise (after you learn how to "use" it, you'1l know what I'm saying).
The game have a russian bias, and artillery is annoying (but better in the last patch), but you can have lots of fun in all "research lines". The teams are balanced by tiers and tank classes, but this system don't take player stats in account (there are some matches you team are bound to get raped - you'll can see the stats and chances on the fly with a - impressive acurate - mod).
The game is free, so try it. It's way more complex and rewarding than the great majority of war-themed multiplayer games.
