OK, i have been thinking about this. The programme was called top ten fighters, was aired about a week ago here in the UK.
But what i have trouble with is the Phantom coming in at number 3
I am not sure that the phantom should be up at number 3 (a plane i am very fond of).
IIRC the scoring categories were, K/d ratio innovation production fear factor service length.
Well the phantom suffered a horrible K.d ratio initially. It had a very long service history. I wouldn't call it innovative in the extreme sense of the word. It was a better intercepter and ground attack vehicle than a fighter. production numbers were impressive. It was pretty average in a dog fight and aerodynamic ability (only saved by the performance or those two whopping great big engines).
So, strictly speaking, i don't think it deserves the number 3 spot as the all time top ten fighters (where the mustang was number 1)
Your thoughts?

I think I've seen that program, or one like it. I don't know how anyone can compare something like that. Was the F4 a better fighter than an F15? A Zero? Me109? Hurricane? The F-86 for goodness sakes? If we are going to lump them all together as "fighters" then the only criteria to me would be lasting impact; in that case the F-4 held its own for a very long time in many roles besides just "fighter" - it was certainly more effective in terms of time span than any of the WW2 Germany or Japan aircraft just due to the amount of time they remained in service.

Sounds like the Military Channel (Discovery) Top 10 shows. Did they compare it to a bus with really big jet engines? Or a pilot say it would probably fly just as well sideways? LOL They've got a lot of those shows--choppers, tanks etc. Hardly scientific, but fun to watch.

Instead of "fear factor" they should have had "looks" as a category. In which case it would be a close call between the Spitfire and the F-104 Even better: "Bad Ass-ness" In that case the Phantom would have won hands down.

I watch all the 'Top Ten' shows on the military channel. I don't always agree with them, but who would, it would turn out different every time, if different people were 'rating' them. I'd imagine the Brits would pick the Spit, rightfully so IMO, and the Germans would pick the 109, for an all time killer, or the 190 for a 'Bad A$$ plane'. The Japanese would pick the Zero, for sure, in it's day, early war, it was unbeatable. And so on.....Impossible to accurately pick a "Number one fighter Plane". It's just a good show, good points and descriptions of the aircraft. These opinions do NOT only come from Americans BTW....but I'm sure it's a little 'bias'. Wish they had more, I'd like to see different countries, pick their favorites. I'd like to see several noted historians, vote on each of their own countries WWII aircraft. Then have them 'all' try to rate all the aircraft from WWII, now that would be interesting...to me. Some different opinions from different people. Better than watching 'Oprah', IMHO....that's for sure.

All of those military "top 10" programs are about as substantive and relevant as those "top 100" greatest artists or bands issues of Rolling Stone.
In other words, mostly meaningless.

@ Tarnsman LOL - i think "fear factor" would be very apt for the F-104 - but the fear would be all from the pilots. It was dubbed the "lawn dart" for some sort of reason.

I watch those Top Ten shows and just argue with the narrator the entire time. He never listens. Even better: "Bad Ass-ness" In that case the Phantom would have won hands down. They're mostly right on some aspects, and as pointed out earlier, if there was a "Bad Ass Factor" the phantom would rate right up there. Phantoms were cool as long as they were running, then once the aircrew got out and started writing up gripes, we started saying "I Ph**King hate Phantoms!" (I was a F-18 guy sent to a F-4S Squadron before they transitioned to Hornets)
