http://gizmodo.com/5975787/woman-drives-for-900-miles-instead-of-90-thanks-to-gps-errorI've read plenty of crazy GPS stories, but this has to be the craziest of them all: a 67-year-old woman drove for 900 miles over the course of two days because of a GPS error combined with her complete lack of attention. Her actual destination was only 90 miles away.
The woman, 67-year-old Sabine Moreau, started her journey in her home town of Hainault Erquelinnes, Belgium. She wanted to pick up a friend at a train station in Brussels, just 93 miles north from her point of origin. But instead, she turned on her GPS, which told her to drive south, taking her turn by turn all the way down to Zagreb, in Croatia. Instead of a couple hours in the car, she spent a couple days to cover the 900 miles that separates both points in Europe. During Sabine's odyssey, she stopped two times to get gas, slept for a few hours on the side of the road, and even suffered a minor car accident. How the hell did this happen without her noticiting? She knows it sounds weird, but she was distracted, she said:
I was distracted, so I kept driving. I saw all kinds of traffic signs, first in French, then German and finally in Croatian, but I kept driving because I was distracted. Suddenly I appeared in Zagreb and I realized I wasn't in Belgium anymore.
Yes, Dorothy, you weren't in Belgium anymore. But as hilarious and zany this may seem, her son wasn't very amused. After a day, he alerted the police, who started a fruitless search. Obviously, not everything is right in Sabine's head or her GPS. One of the comments to article is priceless: It's not THAT weird. I heard about this Italian guy who set out from Spain toward India, started off in the opposite direction, got to a place, and was so distracted by his quest to evangelize that he never totally realized he wasn't in India. Could happen to anyone. LOL! Now seriously, this is not normal. I think she might be suffering from early stages of some kind of metal illness like Alzheimer.

Mentally ill for sure, she's 67 after all. That, or she never took a trip in a car and he didn't know how long it was supposed to take to travel 90 miles?
But even more weird, can you actually cross all those borders without a passport or inspection of any kind?!
When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

Not weird at all. Belgium, France, Germany and Austria all signed the Schengen Treaty, which means open borders - and no border controls - between those countries. And you don't need a passport to enter Croatia if you're a EU citizen. ID card would be sufficient. Both national police forces and customs official will randomly stop and inspect "suspicious" vehicles (or board trains that cross the border and search passengers for contraband or identity) within the border region.

You could indeed cross the "borders" between Belgium, France and Germany without even realising it, safe for the toll gate as you leave and enter different highway companies' networks, because there are no real borders to speak of anymore since the Schengen agreements. When Romania signs the treaty you'll be able to drive from the Atlantic coast to the shores of the Black Sea without showing ID.
Cheers

The GPS error didn't "make" the woman drive the wrong mileage.
This is a classic case of "user error" and not paying attention to obvious things.

Like the article about the ME-323 Gigant that was found. It wasn't just a WW2 German aircraft they discovered, no, it was a "Nazi Leviathan".
I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.
