I'm looking at making a HUD/ combiner using teleprompter glass, driven by a small lcd.. anyone attempted this or is it possible?

Why do people think flight sims are nerdy???

If it's DirectX 9 based (I believe this is the case) it ought to be possible using tools from here: http://graphics.stanford.edu/~mdfisher/D3D9Interceptor.html .
