http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worl...y/?tid=socialssIf you came into the world today and could pick your nationality, there are at least 15 better choices than to be born American, according to a study by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The firm looked at 80 countries, scoring them across 11 variables to determine which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead. The results, mapped out above, are both surprising and not. Here's the full list: http://media.economist.com/sites/default...0110_irt001.jpg

I think the scores were affected by whether people take their shoes off indoors or not in that country....

I can see why some of them are the way they are....others are just plain confusing.
Did they question a wide variety of people from every country? I mean what were the 'wide variables', and which 80 countries, and most important - how many people from each one? Just wondering how badly the numbers get manipulated. It happens.
I can see why some would pick most of the ones that are above America, but some of the positions are just.....weird. Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark.....yeah, I'd like to be born rich too....lol.
But personally, at this age, I wouldn't want to 'move' anywhere.
Interesting post.

As much as I love my country... what the hell is Argentina doing there!? And it's not even at last!
Maybe my POV is a little too materialistic or something, but I don't see how it would be best to live in a poor country than in a rich one. Except if you have tons of money, but in that case any country would do just fine... sort of.
Edit: well, looking at it a little better, there are no rich countries behind Argentina, but still, the fact that there are 40 countries behind is surprising as hell.

When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

Actually I'm glad I wasn't born in Norway or Sweden (#3 and 4 on the list)... I don't speak the language at all... (edit... coming to think of it... although my German is passable I don't speak Schwiizerttsch)

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

But personally, at this age, I wouldn't want to 'move' anywhere. The title can be read several ways. "Born in" could include "birth tourism" in addition to native populations. Do all of the chart toppers grant birthright citizenship?

Do all of the chart toppers grant birthright citizenship? I notice the UAE is on the list. The poor immigrant bastards from Bangladesh and other places that work day and night on Dubais building sites certainly ain't living the good life.

Indeed, I would also think many women in Saudi Arabia would envy their lower-placed counterparts in places such as Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Russia and Ukraine where relatively free opportunities in education, public life and business exist.

Interesting list. I think the list is mostly factors in things that have to do with well being, no so much economic prospects. And to be honest, I don't think any country in the top 40 would be a truly terrible place to live. Well, maybe Saudi Arabia if you're a woman. The title can be read several ways. "Born in" could include "birth tourism" in addition to native populations. Do all of the chart toppers grant birthright citizenship? Actually, birthright citizenship is mostly only granted by countries in the Americas. Jaz

If for whatever reason I had to leave the US, my first choice to move to would be Canada (Alberta specifically). Of course you would want to move to Canada...it's a wonderful place...but Alberta ??? EVERYBODY knows that Newfoundland is best Based on what I've read, Alberta is the closest to the US on the political spectrum scale compared to the other provinces.

The grass is always greener... Gotta agree with Mace here.....sometimes I think this country is taking a big nose dive too. But maybe he's right, "the grass is always greener".......Every country has it's own unique problems. I'm sure there is one that is generally better than them all, but it would be hard to figure which one each person would actually be better off living in. I would think it depends on the person. Course there are some countries NOBODY would want to live in....I don't think there is a long line at the North Korean Embassy. If there is one somewhere.......
