Brass plate and hexagon barrel.....no, no, no.
I've got a Marlin 1894CB 24"bbl. Like this one: Link

Thanks everyone, sorry I took so long to get back. All great suggestions and all so tempting... I'll have to search out your suggestions and give them all a good inspection, I see the nearest gun store has a whole wall of Bolt and Lever Remingtons

Nice 'C45', a hex barrel, and the 1894' version. Beautiful. And it shoots the same caliber as my SAA Peacemaker. Wish I had the cash.......

A Japanese copy of a Browning BL-22? I have a BL-22 and I love it. 15 rounds of Stingers in that thing and you have a fast and potent little package.
Question everything!

22s are a great way to go! I keep a loaded Marlin semi-auto over the door to my garage and have used it quite a few times to get rid of varmits like racoons and opossums. I have chickens, so those critters aren't good to have around. I also have a Remington Model 12-C pump .22 with an octagon barrel that's just over 100 years old (built in 1912). Passed down from my great grandfather. It still shoots great! Inside the butt plate there are some papers...signed by the first born on their 16th birthday starting with my grandfather, my dad, me, and now my daughter...although she doesn't want anything to do with it. It'll go to her first born on his 16th birthday whenever that happens...hopefully not too soon...lol. Ammo is dirt cheap too. I bought a small "milk carton" holding I think 500 rounds of .22LR for like $10 a few years ago. With a bolt or lever action you might even consider a larger caliber rifle that won't break the bank for ammo costs. Since with my Marlin semi-auto I can empty 18 rounds in a couple of seconds, I enjoy the cheapness of the .22. However if I had to bolt to chamber each round it wouldn't go as fast and I could probably afford more expensive ammo because I wouldn't be going through it as fast. Good luck and have fun with whatever you do!

How old is your Marlin?
I saw some new ones recently and they just don't seem as well made as those from several decades ago...

I'd say maybe 20 years old. Everything works fine. I had it jam up once after sitting uncovered for a few years, but after I broke it down and cleaned and lubed everything it's worked flawlessly ever since.

I learned to shoot on a Marlin. Loved the .30-.30.
Modern ones just don't feel as smooth to me.
Thanks, WK.

Marlin hasn't been the same since Remington took over. Basically you want to make sure you get a gun that is 2005 or older. The last new Marlin I bought was the 1894CB in 2004. My 336CS is 1960's vintage and I got my 1895CB in 45-70 in 1998 I think.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks, Colt. Sometimes it's hard to tell if nostalgia is having unfair effects upon judgment... Geesh... I'm heading over the hill. Heh.

Nice 'C45', a hex barrel, and the 1894' version. Beautiful. And it shoots the same caliber as my SAA Peacemaker. Wish I had the cash....... Yeah it's a shame but prices went nuts when they stopped making them. Odd...I also have a 336C 30-30 lever from '2002'. I also own a Marlin .22 lever action, 'Golden Boy'...with the 'bull' barrel, but not hex. I shoot 'varmints' that hang around the bird feeders, on my property. Birds eat bugs, I live in the forest. Also did use it on the Porcupines, which do too much damage to the trees and other wildlife, there's too many of them on my land. I value the trees, they 'ring' the young ones for life. That rifle 'never' misses, I mounted a Nikon 3x9 ProStaff on it....(I'm getting old). The trigger is fantastic. If I miss, it my finger not the weapon. But I think I'm going to start using the M-4 on the Porcupines, the .22lr isn't enough sometimes, and it's not their fault they're.....pests. So I want it to be clean, I just got the M-4, hope it's not overkill? Lucky I have no neighbors to bother.....my shooting will be mostly at night, for the porcupines. The Golden Boy is still good for the Chipmunks, I used to let them hang around, but they eventually knocked over a 100 foot white fur tree 10 feet from the picture window of the house, dug out all the dirt in the root system on one side....it fell on my house...the end for the Chipmunks. We had dozens...and dozens of them. I can hit them in the noggin at 150 feet, every time. Great 'old' Marlin. Can't find them anymore either, they don't make 'em. Wish that was a hex barrel, the 'look' is killer....

I am a big fan of the Ruger 10/22. I have an extra barrel for it that is threaded for my 22 suppressor (silencer). Got a couple different high capacity mags for it. Just got one of the 50 round drums. Haven't tried it yet, so I can't speak of its reliability.
May have to post picture.
