[update] This update is now available on Steam, I'll get the Desura version done ASAP as well. If you have the Desura version and would like a Steam key let me know (sean at shovsoft dot com)

Well many months after Jen's original preview and his problems with getting his Joystick to work.

Lunar Flight is finally getting full Direct input support!

Lunar Flight is built using Unity 3D which at one point had 'unofficial' support for Direct Input through the manual addition of a registry setting. This was subsequently removed in later versions which rendered many controllers useless for Lunar Flight.

I commissioned the help of a friend to write an external .dll DI plugin for Unity and a C# interface that allowed me to work directly with Direct Input. You should now be able to setup any set of devices with ease.

Here's an image showing the new GUI system configured for a Logitech G940, you can see all the device names identified and any POV, Button or Axis will be identified.

The 1.66 Update should be released on the 20th December 2012 on Steam with Desura and other sites updated soon after.

This is great. I bought it a while back but could work out how to set up my gear. Looking forward to more easily being able to play the game.

This is absolutely fantastic. I gave up on Lunar Flight after the registry hack stopped working with my G940. I also wanted to get it working on my arcade cabinet, but getting any kind of analog controls to work was a frustrating failure. So hopefully, tomorrow will be a new dawn for this simulator! Looking forward to it.

Will do. My stick is currently packed away as I've come home for Christmas, but with this and the recent War Thunder update I may bery well have to take her out again. Unless I try playing with a yoke smile

I'll report back when I give it a go.

I'm a bit ashamed to confirm that I'm doing it for that precise reason.

:P

Sorry...

Gave it a spin.

Whoa.

It takes some to adjust the controls, but this new direct input stuff is priceless! biggrin

I'm a VERY HAPPY costumer.

There's just a little gripe with one of my controllers.
I currently have connected to my PC a HOTAS Warthog, a Saitek Rudder (/w toebrakes), a XBox 360 Joypad, a Microsoft Strategic Commander and a Graphic Tablet.

Well, the problem is with the analog sticks of the Xbox pad as I've set them to control WASD movement.
What happens is that it's like the sticks are always non-centered as I keep having a little input.

Solved by removing it, and I didn't really troubleshoot it. So it's a non-issue for me.

I'll try to get the sim to re-check the controllers. smile

At last! I donated at the Beta stage but was so frustrated with the controls that I never even bothered installing the full game.

Installed, setup, managed to land at all 3 crater bases (in practice mode ;))

When I first bought it I tried it with the HOTAS (and I believe it worked fine at the time), but I actually found it was much, much easier to control with the keyboard anyways. Rotation was especially challenging. It was a lot easier to hold the rotate thruster for a certain count, and then hold the alternate rotate thruster for that same count to cancel the rotation. Same deal with translational motion: hold down forward thrust until you're at the halfway point of your journey, and then hold down reverse thrust for the latter half and you'll be stopped by the time you get there (or shorter but equal counts of each if fuel is more precious than time).

I'm sure someone with very good fine motor skills could get more out of analog controls, but I was spending too much time trying to undo the results of (even very, very slight) unintentional axis inputs. As I'm sure you've discovered, once your motion starts to go awry things tend to go from bad to worse in short order. The digital controls allow you to much more easily confine your maneuvers to one degree of freedom at a time.

Analog throttle for the main engine was pretty good though, because then you could set it to just cancel out gravity rather than having to use short bursts to maintain some altitude.

Anyone with an X52 Saitek able to confirm it works ok. I've had one person report the buttons not being detected. I need to confirm its an isolated case or a specific issue with the X52...
