How does Janes F/A-18 compare to Falcon 4 or Flanker 2.5? Is it a 'study sim'? Are the graphics similar to F4, or more like Flanker? Are there lots of 3rd party goodies out for it?

Jane's F-18 is most certainly a study sim. You can find some screenshots here . There are a large number of third-party goodies, most created by TSH (Team Superhornet). These include new cockpits, sounds, objects, missions, theaters, weapons data, and enhanced TrackIR support. Check out the FAQ at the top of the forum for more info.

Snakum, it should run well on your system (particularly if you have Win 95, Win 98, or Win 98SE). Jane's F/A-18's Minimum Requirements (per manufacturer): Win95/98 P266 64MB RAM 4x CD-ROM 4MB Direct3D graphic accelerator card 350MB hard drive space joystick

It's about the only sim I never played back in the day. It looks pretty sharp. I recently bought Flanker 2.5 and I don't really care for it, and so I have stuck with Falcon 4 this week. It'd be nice to have another jet sim to fart around with.
Are there many folks playing it online these days? How is it in multiplay?

It is one of the best, most stable sims there is for online play/multiplay, even when it first came out.
You shouldn't have any trouble at all finding people to fly with online.

I keep my discs in the vault. They may help pay my son's way through college one day. What? No Way! My kid will have to join the Navy and pay her own way to college, because I'm damn sure not going to sell my Janes F/A-18! Ripcord

Many of the Jane's games are closely bid for on Ebay by resellers, who then sell them for prices like what you quoted. If you have a lot of time to spend watching the bidding, you can edge them out and get one for US$15-25.00. If you don't have the time and do have the money, you simply pay the reseller, as I did, (US$40.95 including the postage). To me, it is only the price of a dinner out with my wife, and my enjoyment will last a lot longer.
Which brings me to a question. I expected, from the product description, to get a printed manual and key card. What I got was the manual and key card on a 2nd Jane's CD. Did the game ever come with a printed manual and key card?
It is not only Jane's simulations, but any of the decent sims from "back in the day", in the glory days of PC flight sims. Look for a copy of Red Baron 3D. EECH is going for US$40-50.00 from Amazon resellers. Both of these games have been updated with impressive after-market enhancements. It will not have escaped anyone who has visited a video game store recently that PC games are a niche market now. Console platforms are easier to develop for and more profitable.

Grrr! Oh well, caveat emptor. I've got a color printer at work for the key card.
