Greets all. smile I was just wondering if someone can give me a rough indication of performance increase percentage wise or FPS gain I could reasonably expect from a GTX 580 to the 680 4MB over two monitors? Finger is on the button to buy one now, but in two minds. I use a Samsung Syncmaster T240 1920x1200 and another 1280x1024, and get quite a drop in FPS when using the TGP on that monitor with the 580 (1.5mb version). To give a rough idea, in the A10-C 'quick missions' I get between 17-20 FPS with things going on, dual monitors and TGP active. I'd hate to get it now then find its not much of an improvement (though I think it would be, just need confirmation)

I'm hoping I would be able to get around 35+ on the monitor I use for TGP/TAD etc with most settings on high, (clutter and Tree vis lower though and not really bothered about tree shadows) 1024 MFCD res every frame etc (940 i7 at stock, P6T Deluxe MB and 6gb DDR3 ram @1600) I may overclock the CPU again....I've done it before to 3.4 with Asus 'TurboV' but need to remind myself how I did it without blowing the computer up lol)

Any help/advice greatly appreciated, and thanks kindly. smile

I have a gtx580 twin frozr II MSI card , I was also thinking of
an upgrade to a 680 but it would have only been a 12 - 15% increase , so I did not bother

To be honest I dont think it would be worth spending the money

yeah, generally speaking, a good rule of thumb when upgrading video cards is that you want to jump 2 generations, not just 1, if moving within the same market segment (like 580 to 680 or 560 to 660). There's a LOT of weird renaming shenanigans that happens to complicate this general rule of thumb, but it mostly happens in the real budget sections where you won't be playing games of any sort much at all anyhow.

Rgr lads and thank you both thumbsup ....Yes that's good advice and I did a search last night thinking the same RE the next series, which a lot of people are saying around March next year? Have to admit I expected the 680 to be a lot more of an improvement than that however....Wow. A few were saying the 670 is better value for money, but if the improvement is that meagre (and should be a bit less with the 670) then there doesn't seem to be much point really.

Glad I held off if that's definitely the case. Cheers! smile

I would say the 670 is definitely a LOT better value than the 680. I personally wouldn't purchase a 680 simply due to the existence of the 670. But even then, I feel you're better off just waiting a generation.

I have a 680 on a single 24" monitor and its flawless in DCS with everything up to max. I am hoping to pick up two extra screens eventually. I hear alot of people saying you may as well pick up the 670 as it can be oc'd to match the 680's performance... well the 680 can also be overclocked wink I had three 670's with rotten luck as all were faulty (1x gigabyte windforce and 2x asus directcuII tops) I eventually gave up and just paid a little extra for an EVGA superclocked 680 which was only about £20 more than the 670's I had. Again the first 680 played up but touch wood the second one has been solid for a couple of months now and runs everything Ive thrown at it. I also considered waiting another generation after reading about how they had been cut back performance wise due to ATI's cards performing poorer than expected but I figured where would it end and just got one.

You could also just oc the cpu if you have the appropriate cooling, or even add an SSD if you don't already have one, I have DCS running off my ssd while all other games are on the standard HDD, all is good.

The card I had previous to the GTX580 was a BFG GTX280 OC2 overclocked card
the performance increase was about 35-40% ( which in my mind is the min increase before I will buy)
So you want to skip another gen as well

Does your mainboard support the newer PCI Express 3.0 - because the GTX6xx series support revision 3 with a faster transfer rate - but not sure if this would improve things much.

Hi Mig, I had considered that mate as my Asus P6T V1 MB is PCI-E 2.0 (16x) and I wondered if I would get worse performance with this series because of it. Seemed to be a consensus that I'd be ok and the card would still work fine, just not quite to its full potential....and not a big deal?

Regardless barring some bombshell revelation I think my mind is made up....The seemingly slight performance increase doesn't really look worth it at all for me, so I'll wait till around 1st quarter next year and re-evaluate then I reckon. Thanks again all for the info anyways. thumbsup

I almost got tempted to upgrade to the 670 from the 570, but just thought it was too soon. I'll have to wait for either the 700 or 800 series of cards I reckon. Hadn't noticed the upgrade to PCIE 3.0, which may add to the expense, as I think I'd need a new CPU&MB to take advantage of that, which of course comes with further complications.

You don't need to, as a PCIe 3.0 compatible graphics card is backward compatible with PCIe 2.0.

I know, but knowing it could communicate faster with the rest of my hardware would give me the upgrade bug.
