Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 was released for the IBM-PC in November 1982, remember?

I got into it in Jan 1985 with Sublogic FS2 for the C64. Those were the days!

I didn't get Microsoft Flight Simulator until Ver 3 when I got my first PC (IBM 8088) a few years later. Then I've had every version since. I remember those days before sound cards. That horrible buzzing from the PC speaker!

Played the Amiga version but got bored with it lol. Didn't pick up Flight Simulator again until FS9 came out.

Can you imagine going back to a flight sim where you just have a fixed straight ahead view? Yuk!

Sad that the series didn't live to tell its own anniversary.

FS2 (then Sublogic) on AtariST was my first sim, and in fact my first computer game. I learned much of my first English by reading the manual. I'm still not sure if it was healthy for an 11 year old boy to find VOR-to-VOR navigation fun, though biggrin

I'm still amazed how they could fit the whole thing on a single 3.5" disk.

Undercarriage lever a bit sticky was it, Sir?

Don't have to imagine...i remember flying F-15 Strike Eagle by Microprose lol.

FSX would have been a wet dream back then.

The series would be horrified that it's last iteration was given away for free and didn't offer cockpits for half the aircraft.

Still, X-plane hasen't managed to catch up yet, so that's something :P

1.0, oh the memories. Taking off from Meigs Field, going round the Hancock-Center and trying to land again. Or bombing stuff on the grid in the Sopwith Camel. Or the first flight from Boston to Washington (if I remember correctly), which lasted hours and so my sisters called me "mad and crazy". Nothing has changed so far...

30 years, time has gone by pretty quickly.

I shudder to think how much cash I spent on the MSFS series, add-ons, and the hardware to fly it.

Thousands of dollars to be sure. Hell, a membership at FSGenesis cost me about $130, just for terrain elevation data.

Not to mention Ultimate Terrain, Ground Enviroment, Flight Environment, custom airfields, and all kinds of planes for FS9, and then all of it again for FSX.

Oh my... screwy

Question everything!

Yeah but compared to actual flying costs and I am sure FSX + Payware is still a great deal (at least that is what I tell myself biggrin )

I started with Microprose Solo Flight on C64 before moving onto Sublogic FS2 on IBM PC:

So I am continually amazed by how awesome FSX + Payware addons is... nothing less than amazing... happy B-Day Flight Simulator! happy_bday

Good memories indeed. I spent a lot of time with the original FS in 1986 and again in the late '80's on an IBM clone. Along with Microprose's F15 SE (C-64/128 version), those were my flight sims. The most fun I had with FS was flying out of the grid WWI zone, over the mountains into the Ether...flying for several minutes until discovering a clone of the grid but with something always a bit different...spooky. Now (oh gawd..is it really 30 years??) I'm recently hooked back into civvy simming with FSX and addicted to Air Hauler. thumbsup

I had Flight Simulator 2 back when I was just starting school.

On that note, I'll pour some American Honey out for the sims who have gone before us. sigh

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

I actually have a C64 with a boxed copy of FS2. I fired it up a few years ago for the heck of it.

Holy cow, it was unbearably bad. 1FPS with any "scenery" (and that's a gracious description) if you are lucky and that's not an exaggeration.

We are so spoiled now.
