Hey there, i was modelling a SAM in Python and i was wondering one thing wich i did not find in the manuals.

Do the missiles self-destruct immediately after fuel burnout? Or not on burnout, but immediately when going subsonic? I've been wondering, thanks for the help

PS: Keep up the Amazing work

I think that every missile has an internal clock which counts down after launch. Time is specific for every missile type. If the missile is short range, time will be shorter, and if it is long range time will be longer.

Hmm yes; that's right; but for solid-fuel hence fixed-burn time missiles like the SA-3, the burn would be fixed. I mean if you shoot at a slightly out of range target; would the missile glide on and still attempt to intercept it on momentum; or self-destructs as soon as it runs out of fuel? Heh, Quite a technical question, no?

I know air to air missiles do continue to fly for a period after the fuel runs out. Or at least some of them do.

I've never read anything that specifically says anything about surface to air missiles though.

For S-75 (SA-2) there was an internal clock for about 85 seconds. Please check the description of V-760 missile in the SA-2E topic (the time self destruction mechanizm is the same for all types I believe, just here it is a nuke, so have some "add-on"-s wink ).
