I have a question... which one would you recommend for a beginner - ANW or CE? I know that you mainly post AAR from ANW and you've done all the tutorials for it. But after watching some vids (at the moment I'am following Thanh Hoa bridge) I think that CE is a bit easier to grasp. But then again I may be mistaken:)

And could you also recommend any good book or maybe a web page about naval operations? My knowledge is very basic so it would not hurt to read about it. Thanks again for your work!

It is generally accepted that HCE is more user-friendly than H3/ANW/HUE. It is based more on a windows than H3 so it is often more familiar for new players. Some commands are easier to employ in HCE than in H3, but H3 gives overall more player control.

It is true that most of the AARs on the channel are for H3, but there is help available for HCE and even non-Harpoon games. We help all who ask. If you need help with HCE, there are some videos already available and we can make more as requested along with HCE AARs.

We deliberately made the Thanh Hoa bridge AAR so that new users could compare the game-play between HCE and H3 versions. In fact, there are many HCE scenarios that were re-made for H3. So, a player can try an HCE scenario, then re-try it in H3, then ANW, and, finally, HUE. This allows him to find the version he enjoys most.

There is a nice little manual from Amazon, but I don't know if they have any more copies. Harpoon II: The Official Strategy Guide by Ed Dille and Tom Basham

Harpoon Battlebook: The Official Strategies & Tactics Guide by James Degoey published in 1991

Much of them are covered in the Harpoon3 v3.6.3 manual already included with the game so you don't have to pay for more. smile

Thank you for replay.

I've done today couple of tutorials in ANW and have another question... I bought HUE some time ago. I know that it includes previous versions of Harpoon 3 - 3.6.3 and 3.9.4. Should I focus on one of them or the latest one (3.10.1.0) is the best? I noticed lot's of your AARs are from previous versions.

Apologize for all those questions but I didn't follow the development process of the game and I'am just wondering if there are big differences between them. One thing I did notice today is that in the latest version of the game some UI options are missing (in Submarine Operations tutorial I couldn't set the depth to "deep" or "very deep" but noticed that you could running the older installment). Felt a bit strange to me that it was removed but maybe there is some reason for that.

The focus of HfD was on the H3 v3.6.3 version of the game because it had the least number of problems and would act most closely with what was written in the manuals. The only time ANW or HUE was used was when there was no alternative. This is also how I play the game; avoid ANW/HUE whenever possible.

My suggestion is to take any of the scenarios. Some were even originally written in HCE version. Then play it in HCE (if possible) or H3, play it again in ANW, and then, finally, in HUE. You will probably see significant differences between each version. This way, you can determine the best game version for your tastes. Not everyone agrees that H3 is the best version, but many who conduct this little experiment do. IMO, you will find the AI in H3 to be the most aggressive with the fewest aggravating problems such as monstrous Uncertainty Zones.

The anomaly you mention regarding the Submarine tutorial is just a different way the game operates and is not a bug. In the original H3 version, submarines always had every depth offered with the speed/depth menu even if the water depth at that point on the map did not support Deep or VDeep depth. You could still select the Deep/VDeep radio buttons, but the sub would only dive to maximum depth possible at that geographic point. Later versions of the game simply did offer the lower depths if the map depth did not support it.

Ok, I get it now. I noticed how your tutorial gameplay differed from mine and that was because of the version of the game. I will start with some small scenarios using the 3.6.3 then and move my way up so to speak. Thank you again for your feedback. Hopefully I'll be fine from now on. smile2

Another video After-Action Report for Harpoon3 has been added to the YouTube Harpoon for Dummies channel to help Harpoon players navigate the complexities of the game and to deliver the best possible playing experience.

You can watch the complete Carrier Crash [MP] scenario:

This AAR is an experiment with "giganto-scenario" play, but ANW isn't the best iteration to do that, as events will show. Dealing with triple threat axes can be a bit confusing over a large area.

In direct response to a request for assistance from:
Quote:
ORIGINAL: rsitaly

I have installed the last version of the PlayersDB for ANW, HUE and H3-363 without problem.
I have installed also the file with the "ANW and HUE images" ... the installed worked fine but I have a doubt:
- the installer put these images under the directory DATABASES/PLAYERSDB/PICS
but normally the images are under the directory RESOURCES/DBPICS
so my question is simple ... I have to move the images under this directory or they are found also under where the installer put them?
