If you're ever on Ocracoke Island, visit the British cemetery. It's sovereign British territory about 20x20ft. Interesting piece of history. British cargo ship was torpedoed right off shore. I think 4 sailors are buried there.

Navy had a sub listening post on Ocracoke as well. There were three U-Boats sunk of NC Coast as well as lots of their victims. Difficult diving however to reach some. USS Monitor is also out there.

Don't forget the US was also giving aid to the Soviets as well. After Barbarossa the had almost no real air force and we gave them P-39s, P-47s and P-40s to use until they got production up. I find it interesting that Roosevelt had the insight to see that our direct involvement was inevitable but I still do not believe he knew about Pearl and did nothing. I find it interesting to that the government came up with strategies to finance the war effort. I think it is time the U.S. became a bit more isolationist. Much of the world is quite capable of shedding it's own blood to defend itself.

Interesting thing about the aircrafts delievered to the Soviets is their opinion about them. The P-39's and P-63's received good grades, while the P-47 was felt to be a second-grade aircraft, being compared to the Il-2 in the ground attack role. There are also several stories about Finnish pilots meeting (and in some instances downing) Soviet Mustangs, while archive research have shown that the Soviets didn't use any Mustangs at all in combat.

However, the biggest lend-lease item must surely be this one biggrin

No doubt that the Lend Lease equipment helped the USSR to some degree during the most desperate year of 1941 but in the overall picture, the Lend Lease equipment accounted for a minuscule fraction of what the Soviets fielded during the entire war. By no means did the Lend Lease equipment prevent the USSR from losing the war.

I seem to recall that the Soviets liked the P-40.
