So I decided to introduce my girlfriend to the wonderful and awesome world of Battlestar Galactica by watching the miniseries tonight and she really likes it so far. As for me, it was an absolute joy to revisit all of the characters that I had come to love after seeing the entire series several times. One thing that struck me is how much some of the actors aged between the miniseries and season 4. Dualla, Gaeta and Starbuck looked like teenagers!

For us veteran fans of the show there's a scene early in the miniseries that has some funny resonance. Colonel Tigh is walking through one of the hallways on the Galactica and Doral bumps into him while conducting his tour for the press and he says something like "oh excuse me". If Doral only knew that he was talking to one of the Final Five when he bumped into him. smile

You might want to redo that post with some spoiler tags, just in case some people haven't started yet or are only part way thru the series!

I will also be rewatching the miniseries shortly. I have some extras on the Superman BD set to go thru (1/2 way thru S3's commentary right now) and then I'm on to that.

I rewatched it earlier this year and I must say that it held up pretty well. Yea it has it's bad points but overall I really enjoyed the story arc.

It's such a different and neat experience watching the miniseries when you already know where all of the characters will end up by the end of the series. You start noticing little things that you missed previously.

Yes, especially characters like Gaeta who is such an obedient junior officer in the Mini. The trick is to have the characters grow and go in different directions (like real people do), but still be themselves.

The close friendship and cameraderie between Gaeta and Dualla in the mini was pretty strong and it makes perfect sense why
Click to reveal..
Dualla's suicide in season 4 was what pushed Gaeta over the edge and convinced him to conspire with Zarek

You want all SF on TV to be as good as a Youtube parody? Apples and oranges there.

Errm, no. Although arguably that would be an improvement, too.
Pronoun fail on my part. By "this" I meant BSG. To my mind, only Firefly is in the same league. The rest of TV scifi ranges from mediocre to garbage (even shows that start out promisingly, like Odyssey 5, slide into mediocrity. And some of the more ambitious and intelligent ones like B5 are hampered by clumsy execution or low budgets).
But I know I'm a broken record on this topic, so I'll try to shut up about it.

Pretty much agree with all you said here.

In regards to Babylon 5, what makes it unique and worth watching are the character arcs and the story arcs. Unfortunately you're right that the low budget did hamper some things like the set design, the CGI and the quality of the guest stars/secondary characters. The acting from some of those guest stars was outright atrocious.

Yeah, season one was almost laughable. It was a B-level show with A-level ideas. If only it had gotten the network funding to make its execution match its vision. It was worth watching though for the ambition of JMS's vision, and some of the latter seasons could attain pretty kickass levels sometimes, especially the battle against the Earth's rogue president.
