Hi, trying to run HITR on a new computer. I7@3.4, win home premium, 16g ram, 2g ATI video, 256g SSD. CFS3.exe keeps crashing. I've read all the FAQs tried about everything except messing with my bios. Anyone who can provide any help, it would be appreciated. Also when I return from a mission the screen is very dark? THanks, wiiired

First Stay out of Bios

I hope that win home premium is Win 7, because Win 8 is an unknown quantity

Back down all your sliders, one knotch

Have you configured your video card in Workshop ( White Rectangle )Everytime you make a significant change on your computer . .OFF or something else . .you MUST configure again

You eventually want TRACKIR . . . 4 is all you need, besides 5 is too light sensitive for me

Yeah,win7, I've been using HITR for years, trackIR 5,every config machination possible. Might put it on a 7200 drive instead of the SSD. it's specifically CFS3 that's crashing. I've alread knocked it all down 1 or 2. THanks, though.

When you knocked down CFS3 . . Did you do it via Disc 1 . . or improperly via Control Panel ?

Wiiired--

More details please. When are you experiencing the crashes? Is it before you start a mission, in the middle of a mission, or after you click end mission? Is there a lot of air activity going on at the time, is it getting warmer in your neck of the woods, do you have your anti-virus turned off while playing, etc.

And just in case, the first thing you should do in trying to resolve game crashes is disable all mods you may be running. I HOPE that isn't the problem (for obvious reasons), but a good first step to try.

One more thing: did you upgrade your memory as well? Check to see if you have a bad memory module. Run some memory tests or remove every stick of RAM except one and gradually add sticks again one at a time to see if you can isolate the problem.

In my personal experiences, I have experienced about a 25% failure rate with individual sticks of RAM, so if you have 4 sticks, there is a good chance that one of them is defective. The difficulty is that even defective sticks will work fine 98% of the time. It takes games like OFF to truly push them past their limits.

uncleal i'm not sure what you mean.

HPW, I've vigoursly tested all compents of the computer and there's no problems. I have several different scenarios. I get the CFS3 has stopped working thing in the game in the heat of battle. I also just get an improper end to a mission and the Campaign screen returns and it's just like I have never flown the mission. I have not turned off antivirus, I will try that. I have a totally clean and unmodded install going. I have it all running xp comptability. I'm at like 2 notches down from maxed out graphically. weather is cold and crappy around here. If I really have no last resort I'll start pulling ram. do you think taking if off the Solid state drive and putting it on a spinner might help?

Thanks, wiiired.

I don't think you need to have OFF running in XP compatibility mode.

I recently switched from XP to Win7, and I run OFF in Win7 all the time without any crashing problems. The key, I think, is to make sure to start the program as an administrator--right click on your shortcut, find the compatibility tab, and click the checkbox "Run this program as an administrator." That should clear things up for you.

Funny thing is, I used to have game crashing problems all the time while using XP. Now that I am on Win7, I hardly ever have the problem anymore.

BTW, I also have a SSD drive, although I still run OFF from my regular hard drive.

When you're dealing with CFS3. . The Proper way to uninstall is on disc 1, you put disc 1 in 'D' . . and double clic on 'D' in My Computer

The screen that appears is the same one you saw when you installed CFS3 the first time. . but NOW it asks you if you wish to uninstall . . continue . . when it's done it'll tell you

OR . . You can go to control panel and REMOVE the CFS3 files

The control panel method has been known NOT to effect the registry where the problem may exist

Back in the old days of Phase 1&2 The routine was it fly a mission in the P47 . . . . Then to generate some folders later used by OFF . . Today that is no longer needed

But this time, it couldn't hurt

I'd uninstall by the book, then search for CFS3 files & DELETE

Uncleal, I got you now. Yeah, I did that.

HPW, I talked to tech support, put in new drivers? It seems improved. I will uncheck xp compatability and maintain Run as Sys Admin. Thanks guys.

Just a tip I'd run most your games from a mechanic drive, SSD's are quicker but some do question reliablity, with newer model SSDs and better software support its not so bad but I still leave 10 to 15% capacity free on your SSD, If you decide using a machanical drive to run some of your games from you still get the benefits of running your OS from a SSD so you still get improvements in gaming, either way.

While I don't get a lot of flying time, I'm running on a very similar system. I72600K @4.1 GHz, and a 240 GB SSD + a big ol' 600 GB Velociraptor. I installed on my SSD straight from Win7, no XP mode or XP compatibility settings. Running TrackIR 5 as well, and haven't had a problem yet with CFS3-ETO or OFF HiTR. Hope yu can get it straightened out; other than I have an NVIDIA card we seem close to identical and I wanted you to know it can be done!

I'll check back.

Best,

Tom

HD, thanks for your input. SSD was running ok, but OFF didn't seem to finish well. maybe too fast? Anyway I put it on the mechanical. little bit of FPS hit, but it seems stable. As usual, when I want to experiment, work commands my attention so I can't thoroughly check everything out. I will report as time permits. Thanks for everybody's input. wiiired!
