IMAA stands for International Miniature Aircraft Association, which is ironic because it has to be a plane which is true quarter scale or 80" wingspan. My Dad is a member and he has a 1/3 and 1/4 scale Piper Cub and 1/3 and 1/4 scale Fokker Triplane which are enormous - incidentally the guy at the end of the video is pulling a Clipped Wing Cub, yes clipped. Must have been a windy day some of those landings are a little iffy.

It must have been VERY windy, as it takes a lot to shake up birds that big. I would think someone who can build and operate a plane that big would have a bit more discipline on landing...

Great builders do not always make great pilots when it comes to RC. Also they were dealing with an obviously bad cross wind situation. I used to belong to this group and flew large planes such as a 200 pound C-47 and a 70 pound B-17 and can tell you the added pressure of flying an RC plane that cost as much as a new car makes one a bit nervous at times.
Very large RC planes fly much better than the small, lightweight models you mostly see but they take skill in the landing. Because of the size and weight the landings put real world pressure on retract gear and structure and they can be damaged very easily. I tore an entire nacelle with engine and gear off my B-17 because of a small bump in a grass field. That small bump was like a brick wall to a real plane. Crosswinds are a real problem because they put side pressure on delicate gear that are not made to take much side force so that is why you see many of those planes coming in across the runway and into the grass.

Also might note that many of these Birds are Hanger Queens that only fly at Contests and Exhibitions, consequently they are always a little more nerve wracking than the every weekend flyer that they have more stick time on. The little time I've had on the 1/3 scale cub I tended to start my landings a little further out than I would on the 60" one and found that even with the long approach it would still float the length of the field so they do fly better, but when it's a 100" P-38 it changes things, I've seen some really beautiful models re-kitted.

That video reinspired me to dust off all my old RC equipment... flying my old stuff for a little while but my next big project will be the Top Flight Giant scale Corsair. already have flown one of my foamy fliers in the backyard.. Workbench cleared off and parts list are starting to be accumulated.. although it's a ARF, the whole project will end up being somewhat expensive but beautiful once done.

Hey be careful out there, if they haven't been used in a while your flight batteries could go south on you unexpectedly. Make sure you cycle them and replace if they don't charge properly otherwise it could be real tragic if they fail on you.

Absolutely, that was one of the first things I considered. The one Lipo and transmitter battery both checked out healthy. Kind of interesting I picked up a simulator by Phoenix for getting up to speed R/C a little more quickly. Works great,looks great too. I like it more than the Realflight simulator. Sending off my saito 90 to get properly tuned up then putting it in my four star 60...the next step otw to my giant corsair. Lol.

Just set up my controllers and used them in RealFlight (the demo). Pretty fun!
// CMS Script File
//
// Game Title: RealFlight
// Written By: Ken King
// Date: 8/26/2012
//
script
CMS.B1 = [js1.a2 < 70]; // FighterStick Forward = Elevator Up
CMS.B2 = [js1.a2 > 180]; // FighterStick Aft = Elevator Down
CMS.B3 = [js1.a1 < 70]; // FighterStick Left = Aileron Left
CMS.B4 = [js1.a1 > 180]; // FighterStick Right = Aileron Right
CMS.B5 = [js3.a3 < 100]; // Left Rudder
CMS.B6 = [js3.a3 > 140]; // Right Rudder
endScript
For my throttle I used: DX Mode Off Position Control Parameters Position Keys: 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Works well!

The problem with the World is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
