Seems as good a place as any to me.

I bought all the X-Com series on Steam a while back.
Played the originals quite a bit when they first came out but could not get back into them.
It's not lost any playability but I just can't live with the graphics.

Hence why I am now working through UFO Extraterrestrials Gold biggrin

Bulletstop, the pre-order is up on Steam right now (if Steam is your thing).

Let's hope they do the original justice.

Yeah really looking forward to the new one, all the dev videos they have for it on youtube, the gameplay looks great and like it will be a modern version of the original...

Will be preordering it for sure.

I have no idea how the will make the custom base be invade-able but that was one of the best features of the original game. Without it.... meh. Their fishbowl / ant-farm idea kind of sucks IMHO.

I would like to know that too, If it is like the orginal I do not see why the lifts can not be utilized like before. I know Chucky and I get paid this coming Friday... I do think they will stick close to the orginal and I am hoping it is even better then the orginal.

Damn, just watched 16 minutes of that test play and I am drooling. Anyone else pre-ordered this?

Yeah that guy playing in the stream was not the most tactical hehe, I haven't heard of a demo, but will definitely be pre-ordering, just waiting to see a decent preorder sale, so far GreenManGaming has it ~10% off... (it's a Steamworks game).

If indeed there are no base defense missions (can't seem to find official confirmation just some forum posts from fans discussing being worried about it due to only one 2D base in the previews) then those defense will be missed as they were fun in the original game, but what I see there still beats 99% of the modern games I see coming out these days so I am definitely still interested.

@Master have you seen confirmation on that base defense question?

UPDATE:
----------
I looked on the official forums and saw a reference to this dev interview which mentions base defense:
http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/xcom-enemy-unknown/1220087p1.html

Quote:

GameSpy: For the geoscape, and the map view, I assume that you only get one base this time around.

JS: That's true. You only get one base, and there are a couple reasons for that. But you have one base, and then you have hangar bases on every other continent that you expand your interceptor force into. So you still do interceptions on every continent, or every continent where you have satellite coverage. But the one base, also at the beginning of the game, when you choose what that continent is, every continent has specific bonuses associated with it. So the starting point has a difference in terms of what bonus you'll get, and as you add more satellites, then the bonuses increase on that continent. So there's a draw to expand your satellite coverage to other continents, because you're getting those continent bonuses, and there's also an exponential reward for keeping your satellites on the same continent.

That's one of the things that happens on the geoscape. And then, because we have one base, and this is where research takes place and engineering takes place, and all your soldiers are now in the barracks at this one base, the base-building is a little more involved. We have new facilities, and there are one-off facilities, but there are also facilities where, as you build them, the adjacency becomes more important. As you start to excavate, then you want to keep your, let's say your satellite uplinks or your power stations or your laboratories, adjacent to each other, because they all offer distinct bonuses if they're built horizontally or vertically adjacent. Things like that.

GameSpy: Does that base ever come under attack?

JS: Yeah. Later missions, we're not talking about.

Discussion on 2K xcom forums seems to mention removal of base defense, so it seems like it would confirm it... oh well, those will be missed for sure, but what I see in the game still looks really fun to me.

Hmmm... GMG here still lists it at £29.99 same as Steam...

Chucky, if you love your wallet more than XCOM, do **NOT!!!*** watch the video!

Feels like this'll be even more awesome than Jagged Alliance Back in Action...

Ah must be the US Region that has the 10% off deal, conversely you might want to see if your GMG international version page for xcom allow you to use their 25% off voucher which is currently not allowed for the US version of xcom:
25% off Digital Games till Sep 10th Voucher: GMG25-1BW0K-K1A3G

£29.99 is at the limit for what I usually pay for this sort of game.I would like to see a discount for sure.
Steam just has a pre-order bonus, with a free copy of Civ V if enough pre-order it.Meh,I have Civ V already.

Chucky, you might want to try that GreenManGaming 25% off voucher code, it is supposed to work with xcom preorder everywhere except North America.

If that is true then I am very sad. Building and defending your base along with deciding if you should use a closer base with less experienced men on terror missions or if you should send in the big boys was one of the BEST parts of the original.

That voucher works with GMG taking it down to about £22. Still about £21 over my budget, dammit! Seeing as this isn't coming out until Oct., I wonder if I can wait until the end of this month to pre-order.... or if I can wait until it goes on Steam's Christmas sale...

Looking forward to this one as well.

Have a backlog of un-played games though, so may wait for the Steam Christmas sale...

Maybe.

Quote:
Before zooming back into the tactical level, here’s how base and squad management works. There’s just the one base, XCOM HQ, although you do get to choose which continent it’s located in. There’s a geographical bonus for the placement. These include Asia’s ‘Future War’ boost that reduces the cost of advanced weaponry and training, and South America’s efficient questioning and dissection techniques, which allow the player to complete autopsies and interrogations instantly.

Being based in one location doesn’t mean it’s not important to expand coverage though and this happens in two different ways. First of all, new satellites and uplink facilities must be constructed. The satellites can then be launched over different countries, which reduces the panic level in that part of the world and provides a bonus from the ruling government. Any UFOs in the nearby skies will also now be detected and this is where the second part of geographical coverage comes in to play. Detecting UFOs is all well and good, but to bring them down you’ll need to station Interceptors, or more advanced fighters, on that continent as well. They can be transferred or purchased, and to stop the world from turning its back on XCOM, it’s necessary to expand coverage frequently and intelligently.

The single base doesn’t dumb down the strategic side of the game and it has the advantage of looking utterly stunning, the side-on ant-farm design a perfect introduction to the game’s chunkily believable B-movie aesthetic. An alien containment chamber is instantly recognisable because it has a massive transparent chamber in the centre, with science bods prodding clipboards all around. Engineering workshops are full of automated machinery, robotic arms ready to build massive guns. And the guns really are massive – a heavy weapons squaddie can’t be mistaken for anything else because he is toting a bloody great machine gun, a rocket launcher strapped to his back.

This made me sad and probably lost them a sale. Yea the antfarm is nice but the multiple bases and base defense/reclaim was such an important part of the original. It was actually one of the ONLY reasons I enjoyed the original as much as I did.

Yeah I will miss that too, but the sum of the new parts still make it a compelling game for me compared to the drought of good turn-based tactical games these days, maybe they will be able to add base defense later on.

Looking forward to playing this.

If they add it in as DLC I will buy it but I doubt it. (might buy it anyways once all my friends start raving about it but who knows I just feel betrayed a bit)

Heheh good question, maybe the upcoming Xcom and Borderlands2 will give me reason to balance out my current MWO addiction so I don't burnout biggrin

You know life's good when my main gamer problem is whether to spend time playing a new Mechwarrior game or a new XCOM game, the last time that happened it was the 90's I think... must be getting old.

Yeah, we don't see games of this type that often so even if they leave out the "base defense" bit, I'll still get it.

Pretty difficult lately from keeping myself from re-installing the old XCOM games and having another go.

I've pre-ordered, but just saw that there appears to be a Demo available on the Steam store page:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/200510/

On the right side there is "Download Demo" button, it's 5GB and downloading now for me... hope to be playing this later today either at lunch or after work.

PS. initially was getting a "subscription error" trying to download the demo but a Steam restart cured that...

The demo could've been smaller, like 1-2GB. No idea what made it so big.... maybe all that voice-overs.

Despite griping bout the filesize, the gameplay is as was shown in one of the videos in this thread. Move and shoot, or double-move, but some guys can run-n-gun which is double-move and shoot. Small gripe about animation, a squaddie runs up to a corner of a building but ends up facing the wrong way. Another gripe is the view... you can rotate, but isometric, not smooth rotation. I hope it is possible to edit the control keys in the full game.

As for the base, it is fun to look at, but I can't seem to zoom in. Plus the different places are accessed by the menu at the top, clicking on the area itself doesn't seem to work.

So all-in-all, clunky interface.... but I'm not buying this for the UI biggrin

Oh, and in one mission the aliens were close together..... so I tossed a grenade between them! Yay! Kaboom! Two-for-the-price-of-one!
