just found this thread in OFF sub-forum, don`t know if the link was posted before, but I`m only on page 5 and have seen many pics I`ve never seen before, so I thought others may not have noticed it in the OFF board:

Seeing the pics of the Russian and German soldiers together laughing and joking around are poignant indeed.

A lot of cool pics there. I looked up those two U-Boats U-36 and U-45. Both sunk shortly after the war began. Very interesting pics.

I especially like the Gigant pic here. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co..._323_Gigant.jpg

I could not say poignant about them. Find them disturbing , but in a different way, more chilling.

I only came to page 50 or so yesterday, but the most interesting stuff for me were the Navy and Luftwaffe pics. Some detail photos of "Bismarck" and "Graf Zeppelin" were completely unknown to me.

Sometimes it is a pity there is no info about the background of the pics, f.e. the Wellington bomber with German markings or the Me 109 next to the Arado(?) production line.

And these small early-war "tanks"......

At page 12, you find a bunch of photographs depicting Airborne troops in Creta. After the one with the paratrooper playing clarion, you'll find a serie in which the commanding officer wears a tropical helmet, with the Germans cornering some civilians they are about to shoot. The pictures of the shooting exist but are not shown, of course, by this (very special) forum members.

Yes, I got the feeling that this particular website or person likes pics of German troops in action which personally I never understand. I'm more interested in the equipment shown. I enjoy the pics from a hiostorical perspective, but some are quite disturbing knowing what happened during the war with the German army on the march.

I of course don`t know the intention in that thread nor of those posting there. I advanced to page 65 today.

I found a lot of pics not displaying, however some of those showing were really nasty, so I don`t think it is intentional. Look at post No. 1, it seems many pics are a repost from one older thread, so it is possible that simply the links don`t work anymore. Why should they post posts with pics not showing? They could simply have deleted them.

IIRC at around page 20 things got ugly. And after watching so many pics, I don`t know if they showed these pics of shooting Jews and civilians intentionally at that very point.

After some time browsing that thread, I was about to be carried away because of the pics of young men and their gear, like the stuff we see today. Until these pages with said shootings or the concentration camps came.

I don`t know if this is a pattern, but to me, it seems so. Many pics which are not that different from any other armed conflict and then those pics, which show why it was different.

I always have to wonder, looking at photos of WW2 with horses and carts alongside tanks etc. later on, how technology would have advanced were there not a war?

Most of what we have today has stemmed from inventions used in wars so would we be less advanced technologically?

That's an excellent question and my response would be yes. One thing I find myself pondering sometimes is how radically different the world today would be had WW2 never occured.

Depends on where in the course of events the war was averted.
-Considering the political situation in Germany in the 30's what chance is there that Hitler would not have become Chancellor?
-Or What if Hitler had remained satisfied with taking France in 1940 and the conflict ended then?
-could Japan have taken the oil resources of the far east without starting a wider war?

I think the cake was pretty much baked and a second world war was going to happen sooner; or as Hitler supposedly promised his military no later than 1950. It could have been even worse.

As Foch said at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919: "This is not peace. It is an armistice for 20 years". His prophecy ended up being very accurate.

He was right, of course. The metaphorical half-time whistle was blown at 11AM on November 11th 1918 but the contest was resumed in 1939 after lengthy and hopelessly ineffective team-talks by the toothless League of Nations.

Yeah, what would half the video games have been about without WW2?!!
