In Carinhall, Goering walks the corridors with his Generals.

Five steps behind them, carrying coats and briefcases, Oberleutnant Hein Kill and Unteroffizier Fritz follow.

Fritz: what is this 'VonKhan protocol' Herr Oberleutnant?

Hein: well, in the old days, this strategy would be used to lure the RAF up to fight with one raid, and then with the next raid you would try to catch them on the ground refuelling.

Fritz: old days? What old days?

Hein: Ja, before the 2.12 update.

Fritz: The what?

Hein: you see Fritz, players felt that was unrealistic. Would the RAF just sit on the ground waiting for bombs to fall because their machines were only half full of fuel and ammunition? No! They would scramble as many machines as they could of course. So with the 2.12 patch the code has been adjusted to simulate RAF scrambles even when the squadrons are not at readiness. They won't be fit to fight, but they will try to get airborne and out of the way of the incoming raid. It's a clever bit of code.

Fritz: Patch? Code? Simulate? What is this goobledygook you are speaking? What does it all mean?

Hein: that is the fun of beta testing Fritz, we do not yet know what it all means. But we will find out...

Fritz: beta testing? I think, respectfully, you might need your head tested Herr Oberlt.

Hein: you are not the first to think so Fritz.

19 August 1940

RAF pilots run for their aircraft during a scramble.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for today was correct. Poor weather, heavy cloud at 10,000 feet, over all of the area of operations.

Early morning low level recon confirmed the weather conditions, but also reported the enemy had made repairs to airfields around London and was repositioning its fighters forward again.

The decision was made to delay initiating the VonKahn protocol until weather conditions were favourable. Indeed it was doubtful operations would be possible at all.

Small scale trial raids were planned against West Malling, Manston and Lympne to see if bombing was possible in the poor weather. Raids were sent in just under the cloud base.

The West Malling and Lympne strikes spotted fighters in the cloud, but did not locate their target, nor engage the RAF. These missions were a failure.

The Manston raid was also conducted in heavy cloud.

The gruppe leader was about to abort the raid, when a break in the clouds was evident.

An airfield appeared!

Unsure of whether this was Manston, but knowing the chance to attack would not likely present itself again, the bombers were ordered to begin their run.

At that moment, two squadrons of RAF fighters engaged the bombers. The destroyers of ZG76 responded.

The engagement was brief. As the bombers pulled away from the target...

The RAF fighters disappeared into cloud and the Luftwaffe escort were forced to disengage.

Two RAF fighters were claimed, for 2 bombers lost.

It was a most unsatisfactory result. Operations staff concluded it would be fruitless to conduct further operations this day.

(The airfield hit was in fact Biggin Hill. In the cloud, the mission had penetrated further inland than planned.)

*********

20 August 1940

Weather on the 20th was once again cloudy, but with clear patches, and conditions were deemed suitable for initiating the VonKahn protocol!

Multiple large scale raids, timed 30 minutes apart, were planned against London RAF airfields.

The enemy responded in strength to only one of the raids. No fewer than 60 RAF aircraft were identified in action against the Hornchurch raid.

Eduard Neumanns 'flying cats' of I/JG27 had not had a distinguished Battle so far. The had been accused by other units of 'overclaiming' with their records showing claiming 76 aircraft downed, although losses of pilots were heavy with 42 Bf -109Es lost, and 38 pilots killed, missing or POW. Escorting KG53, they were determined to show their claims were not fanciful.

Over the coast, Neumann sighted RAF fighters and called his men to attack.

The RAF fighters, out of position and fearing for their lives, fled for the cloud.

Neumann cursed. Was this to be another fruitless sortie? Would these RAF cowards never turn and fight?!

Fruitlessly he chased the Hurricane through cloud, losing and then finding him again.

Finally, he closed, the superior speed of his 109 bringing him in range of the coward.

The Hurricane zoomed and stalled, but the 109 followed him upward effortlessly.

At the top of the climb, he fired and the Hurricane fell away, its tail chewed to pieces.

It fell into a field below. Neumann looked around, but the sky was empty, of both friend and foe. No one to back his claim then. He wondered if they would be accused once more of 'overclaiming'.

In total 6 RAF aircraft were destroyed in the air, for only 2 losses. 7 aircraft were destroyed in other raids, for 1 loss.

Many aicraft were destroyed on the ground however. Recon indicated a further 20 RAF aircraft destroyed on the ground, for a total of 32 aircraft destroyed for the day.

428 enemy fighters have now been destroyed, more than half of the aircraft the RAF had available at the start of the Adlertag!

Meanwhile the Luftwaffe has lost only 251 fighters. Our kill to loss ratio is therefore still nearly 2:1, despite the terrible events of last Saturday.

Most 11 group airfields are now destroyed, including north London fields such as Hornchurch and North Weald. Only 3 of nearly 20 raids yesterday were engaged by the RAF, and only one of those in strength.

INTEL

Intel indicates the RAF is marshalling its forces now on airfields in 12 group north of London, and 10 Group in the West.

Further intel indicates that fighter production has been largely dispersed and has not reached previous levels, but one major center of Hurricane production remains at full production capacity. This is the Hucclecote Gloucester factory northwest of London.

Operations staff recommend that despite the difficulties of deep penetration raids, these targets must now be attacked.

Now that you did a slam bam on the airfields, you can also try this with targets within London (ie. all docks, refineries, woolwich arsenal, etc.) by opening the London target page.

This is going to make the guys based in the Northern airfields come south to engage what will be a series of raids all in the London vicinity.

If you want to have fun, do the London blitz, but save one raid with a 110 escort to hit a main northern airfield an hour after you're done buzzing the heck out of London. Should catch a bunch of fighters on the ground.

Invasion barges being readied at Calais. Given ongoing RAF resistance to our raids (eg the interception of Hornchurch raid by 3 wings of RAF) Admiral Raeder remains sceptical that the necessary precondition of air superiority over the Channel and landing zone can be met.

Attacks against London, as stated in Directive 17, can only be ordered by The Fuhrer!

"5. I reserve to myself the right to decide on terror attacks as measures of reprisal."

Has such an order been received?!

The Operations Staff await clarification...

By when do you have to have them down at what level (how many units at Cat C), and where are you now?
And based on your experience till now, how long will it take to get them there, assuming you can get them down at the same rate overall or in the last few days?
Basically crunch some numbers to see how many planes you have to shoot down daily, also considering production and recovery rates.

So the question is, has the last day made sufficient progress with 30:3, or would you be better off fighting at 40:40.

That's top secret wink

But in rough terms it works like this: if before Sept 7 "and" the sum of RAF CatA and CatB squads is less then X then LUF wins and Operation Sealion is initiated.

If after Sept 7 "and" the sum of RAF CatA and CatB squads is less then X then LUF wins.

If victory conditions are not met by Sept 15, Operation Sealion is cancelled, and the campaign is lost.

We have no way of knowing how many RAF are at Cat C except to judge by the amount of interceptions - how many squadrons the RAF can put up against us in a day.

At this rate, with 500 aircraft avail, we can estimate the RAF still has 30-40 squadrons of aircraft, but we do not know their pilot/fatigue situation. Many of these may be Cat C with fatigue.

With 15 days left to Sept 7, if we continue attrition at 30-40 per day, we can potentially cut the RAF down from current 500 aircraft to almost nothing by Sept 7 (30*15=450), as long as we can provoke them to attack rather than marshall their forces.

And as long as we can preserve our own fighter forces sufficiently (we currently have around 680 Bf109s but pilots are the problem, as several gruppen are Cat C with fatigue).

PROPOSAL

Operations Staff propose another day of saturation raids, also reaching into the north and west. This will require use of longer range twin engine fighters as escorts, but should allow our Intelligence Directorate to be able to tally the number of enemy squadrons seen in operation. This will give us a better estimate of current RAF strength as well as continuing the attrition of the RAF.

Luftflotte 2 and 3 operations staff prepared the largest tasking list of the war to date. Dozens of targets, from Filton airfield in the West of England...

To Wittering in the North...

And the airfields of 11 Group in the SE, all would be hit within the space of 2 hours by multiple waves of raids with bombers in staffel strength and escorts of 2 staffeln or 1 gruppe. Raids the RAF could not afford to ignore, but neither could they hope to intercept all. The tasking list filled three pages...

The objective: to overwhelm the RAF command and control system, forcing it to commit all available squadrons defend key targets, and allowing a better intelligence assessment of current RAF capability and resources.

From 0700, the air armada gathered over France, advancing toward England like a storm front.

Raids penetred deep into 11 Group airspace before RAF interception, indicating the RAF fighters had probably been scrambled from airfields in 12 and 10 Group.

The RAF adopted a 'proportional response' strategy based on the strength of our bomber numbers, sending enough fighters to take on the bombers, and trying (without success) to avoid combat with our fighters.

West Malling, North Weald and Biggin Hill raids were met with 2 squadrons, whereas Kenley, and Rochford were only met with one squadron. Raids on Stapleford in the north, and Middle Wallop in the west, were not intercepted at all.

Combat reports indicated that after engaging, the RAF units withdraw north and northwest, again indicating they are operating from airfields outside 11 Group.

In the first 7 raids, 24 RAF were claimed damaged or destroyed for the loss of 9 of our own - mostly bombers.

Raids in the north and west met even less resistance, with only 4 RAF squadrons engaged, against 7 raids. 2 RAF were claimed damaged or destroyed for only 1 aircraft lost.

The most ambitious of these raids saw two staffeln of He111s from KG27, escorted by 2 staffeln of fighters from II/JG54, penetrate deep in the English northwest to raid the Hucclecote Gloucester factory, which intel indicated is a source of parts for Hurricane fighter production. II/JG54 was led into action by Hauptmann Otto Hans Winterer, who had only taken command the month before, following the loss in action of Major Richard Kraut.

It had been a hard month, but Winterer was newly energised by the appointment of a new commander for JG54 following the 'Goering purge' which saw Major Hannes Trautloft being placed in command of JG 54, replacing Major Mettig. Trautloft was an inspiring leader - aggressive and ambitious in battle, with a strong affection for his pilots.

II/JG54 wore the emblem of a Lion into battle...

And Winterer was determined his men would live up to the boast.

His staffel was flying 'return escort', and their brief was to meet the bombers and escorts returning from Hucclecote over the English coast, and drive off any pursuing RAF. But over the radio he heard urgent calls for assistance indicating the bombers were under heavy RAF attack (2 squadrons, it turned out) so he turned his staffel north and pushed his throttle forward to reach the melee as quickly as possible.

His staffel arrived on the scene to see a bomber flaming to the earth below, trailing parachutes.

There was no time to think. Rushing toward him was an enemy fighter. He opened fire. Then he realised it was being pursued by another Bf109, which also opened fire!

The three aircraft merged head on in a hail of lead.

Winterer felt rounds striking his airframe, but whether they were friend or foe, he had no way of knowing. As the enemy Spitfire flashed past he saw it roll onto its back and fall away, seemingly out of control, wings perforated with holes.

He did not have time to confirm it was destroyed, as within seconds he was engaged again, this time on the tail of an RAF Hurricane.

He knew immediately that he was up against a veteran when the RAF pilot, rather than bunting nose down to try and dive away from his attack, rolled inverted first before pulling his machine into a downward loop. Winterer knew the inferior RAF machines tended to stall if they were bunted, but this pilot also knew it, and by inverting he kept the fuel flowing to his caruburettor, and full power to his engine.

But Winterer followed him through the loop, knowing he would have to pull out some time. The Hurricane did so, but rather than level out, the pilot hauled it into a banking left turn, not taking any chances.

He was good.

But in that moment, Winterer was better.

A volley of deflection fire from his 109 caught the Hurricane in the engine, and set it smoking.

He grunted in satisfaction, and then in surprise, as the RAF pilot deliberately stalled his machine, causing Winterer to overhaul him at alarming speed. At the last moment, he dived beneath the almost stationary Hurricane...

He was so close, that looking frantically upward, he could see the stitching in the gunport fabric of the Hurricane and the bullet holes his own guns had caused, as it flashed overhead.

By the time he recovered his composure, the Hurricane was gone. Winterer was alone in the sky.

His hands still shaking, he turned his machine for home.

(What Winterer did not know, is that he had met a Polish pilot of the newly formed 302 squadron, based at Duxford, in its first engagement. The pilot he had faced was none other than 302 Squadron commander, Mieczyslaw Mümler, who would go on to claim 5 kills, despite entering the Battle late in the campaign.)

The final wave of 11 raids, which included attacks on London airfields and industry, saw only 6 RAF squadrons engaged, with 10 RAF fighters claimed damaged or destroyed for 1 loss on our part

CONCLUSION

Only 13 RAF squadrons were engaged in this intensive period of action, and most of our raids went unintercepted. Combat reports indicate the RAF aircraft which were in action came from fields north of London, and in 12 Group to the west, and that the 11 Group airfields are largely non operational.

The enemy seems close to collapse.

Only 7 RAF fighters were actually confirmed destroyed in the morning action though this tally may rise when bomb damage assessment is conducted. It is assumed that most of the remaining RAF strength was in the air when we hit their airfields, due to the lack of surprise of such long ingress over enemy territory.

Options for afternoon operations:

- 1 major raid comprising 1 gruppe Do17s and 1 gruppe Bf109 escort
- Unescorted Stuka raids on coastal airfield targets to ensure these remain non operational (this may enrage the Reichmarschal as it would be against his clear orders).
or
- All units stand down for large scale raids on 21 August, weather permitting

Your deliberations eagerly awaited.

Send them in a tad deeper, then let the StuKas bomb some coastal targets.

Schultz, Dispatch and advisory to Herr Hein Kill The Staff is divided on Resource Allotment for afternoon Jag. Request Herr Hein Kill
use his discretion. Now to other matters, this Idea for saving rubber and a/c tire damage on Fighter a/c looks promising. Hook the fighters on top of the bombers and ferry them to forward airfields. Return damaged fighters the same way. It looks promising on saving fuel as well too. You may have the staff look into this matter upon the completion of Eagle Attack on England.

It looks like Herr HeinKill's experiments in the field have already been a rousing success General Carrick.

At this rate we should have captured the entire RAF by the end of August!

20 August afternoon

OPERATIONS CANCELLED

Operations staff regret to announce that weather over the theatre deteriorated during the afternoon.

21 August morning

OPERATIONS SUSPENDED

The low front which moved in yesterday afternoon continues to dominate. Recon indicated cloud base at 5,000 feet. A decision on potential for further operations will be taken after mid-day recon.

21 August afternoon

OPERATIONS RESUMED

Recon conducted at 1500 indicated large clear breaks in cloud cover over SE England suitable for resuming operations.

Several of our fighter gruppen were apparently not expecting to be called up today, and reported themselves not available due to lack of operational aircraft (marked with >.< ) Their commanding officers will be disciplined.

All Bf110, and Kampfgruppe however, were available and at readiness.

In accordance with the wishes of General staff, several large scale raids (1 gruppe bombers, 2 gruppen escort) were planned for deep penetration targets, judged to have a high likelihood of attracting significant RAF response (assuming the RAF is still able to respond).

OUTCOME

Interestingly only one of the Duxford raids were met in strength. 72 RAF fighters, the equivalent of 6 squadrons (2 wings) were engaged.

17 aircraft were claimed as destroyed or damaged, for the loss of only 2 Luftwaffe aircraft.

Subsequent debriefing confirmed 12 RAF fighters had been destroyed, and 5 damaged.

Both targets, RAF Duxford and Hucclecote Gloucester Factory, were heavily damaged in the raids.

ASSESSMENT

While 12 confirmed kills is a low result given that these raids involved 400+ sorties, Operations Staff believe we can draw several conclusions from the day's action:

- The enemy cannot fail to have detected these raids either before they entered British airspace, by radio, or visual observation on their ingress to target.
- It can further be assumed that, given there was a more than 24 hour break in operations, the RAF should have been able to bring the majority of its available aircraft to readiness to intercept these raids
- The size of the raids should have provoked a major response from the RAF
- Only one of the four raids was intercepted, and only 6 RAF squadrons were engaged.

These facts lead to the following assessments:

- The enemy is no longer able or willing to intercept multiple raids, even to protect what it should regard as strategically critical targets. If a schedule of saturation raids is followed, very few will be intercepted, and with only small losses

- The value of large scale raids with large escorts, which draw such a limited response, is questionable. It appears doubtful now that the RAF is even capable of getting more than 6 squadrons in the air at one time.

- defacto air superiority over the Channel and potential landing zones for Operation Sealion has been achieved.

Heinkill (whispering on radio): Fritz...come in Fritz...can...you...hear....me?

Fritz (whispering): Ja, Ja, I am receiving you fine. I am standing right behind them in the funny pants trying to look like a guard.

Heinkill: So, is it true? The battle is over? The invasion will begin?

Fritz: You know, I much prefer this army costume with the helmet, to that deer costume you put me in last time.

Heinkill: The plan Fritz! You know that if they start the invasion, you and I will be recalled to active duty! No more cushy Carinhall dinners for us!

Fritz: If you would stop talking, Herr Oberleutnant, I might be able to hear....

.
.
.

Heinkill: Fritz!

Fritz: Oh, ja. Sorry, I went to sleep there. It is hot in this helmet...so the Reichmarschall wants to tell the Fuhrer he has won the Battle...blah blah blah...Kesselring says the RAF still has approx 400 fighters...blah blah so where are they then...blah...Sperrle says they are hiding in Scotland...blah laughter blah...Kesselring says the best proof would be to conduct a raid on London and see if the RAF can stop it...mumble murmur murmur...Goering says the Fuhrer would freak...Sperrle says we are authorised to attack industry targets so why not attack industry targets in London...aha aha...ja, they all think that is a good idea...and Kesselring says for good luck smash some more airfields while we are at it.

Heinkill: So, at least one more day of attacks?

Fritz: Ja, shame.

Heinkill: Shame?! You are so keen to get back into battle?

Fritz: Not really, but I do like the English lager.
