USS Arizona memorial as seen from the flying bridge or the USS Missouri. Taken 8/22/12 Photos of the USS Bowfin and Pacific Aviation Museum to follow. I have the opportunity to visit Oahu on avg about every 18-24 months to visit family. I try and make it to the memorial each trip.

Note the oil slick. It is amazing that a drop of oil comes up every few seconds and that so little can make such a large slick. For those who don't know this leak has been on going since the USS Arizona was sunk on Dec 7th '41.

Great pic.

I had the pleasure to visit BB Iowa when she was still active and visited the "Kiel Week" (biggest sailing event in Europe) in the 80ies.

She was to big for the base, so she had to anchor in the bight and the visitors had to be brought to her with small boats. You can imagine the sight when you approched her on almost sea-level.

Lovely pic Gunslinger.
What are the 3 white things on the left and what's with the 'sunken' bridge in the background?

The rings and "bridge" are part of the memorial for the USS Arizona that lies beneath them, she was sunk on December 7th 1941 during the japanese airraid on the base.

The bridge in the background is the bridge to Ford Island. It does look sunken.. But the middle rides just above the water. The white concrete structures to the left are the mooring. Blocks for the Arizona and other BB's that were moored at that time.

Very nice - I was there a few years ago and the Missouri had been taken somewhere for maintenance, so I missed out on seeing her.

If you are talking about the white things in the water to the left, those were the mooring spots for other battleships on battleship row.

If you look closely you can see the names of the ships that were present on the attack.
