I have read where some others have had this problem, but I thought I would throw it out there again to see if anyone had come up with a new or better idea.

I am playing with the newest update 4.11.1 as I really like the improvements they made in the AI. But when playing a campaign I'm having a terrible time with the new overheating elements they put in. When I start a new mission all my AI squad mates go like bats out of hell thru the waypoints at full power (100%). Since I can't keep up with them I use the Auto pilot feature which helps keep me up with them. I did this on the other versions with no problem. But with 4.11.1 using Auto pilot makes the engine constantly over heat, so when we get to the battle I'm flying a plane that can't go anywhere near full throttle or it will instantly overheat. This takes alot of fun out of the game, obviously.

Anyone figure out how to either slow the AI squadmates down, or some way I can keep up with them without having to use the Auto pilot ??

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tracy

I'm currently playing a Bf 109E-7/Z campaign and it's even worse than that. Many times, the moment I switch off the autopilot, the engine goes dead, as if the autopilot overused the GM-1 boost.

I know, some of these things are totally baffling. In a game where so much work has been put in to make it as realistic as possible, who sat there and decided the squadrons would fly at the fastest possible speed to their target waypoint, using as much fuel as possible and putting as much stress on the engine as possible before entering combat.

Then we have all the patches and improvements, yet this is never looked at. I don't think it would be that hard to correct as its not a problem in ROF, EECH, or FC2.

I sincerely doubt that the game's developers have ever cared that much about realism. After ten years of development I still have to look at the ridiculous orange-red banner flashing across the screen, saying "MISSION COMPLETE". Very realistic, isn't it? smile

You could just turn off the Engine Overheat button.

Never happens to me, despite running "engine overheat" on "on". Maybe it's because I have "complex engine management" on "off"?

Black Eagle...
I didn't know there was such a thing, haven't been on that screen in years !!
That is what I will do, although its a shame they just can't fix it !!

Heretic...you are lucky, this never happened to me either until 4.11.1 !!

Thanks for the help.

Well, I'm running 4.11.1m. Maybe it's plane specific?

The 109F at least never really overheats.

You may install my fixes for that. Find them at:
Greybeard's IL-2 corner
You should dump first two (PacificPlanes.zip and Revised_Cruising_Speed.zip) into your DGen folder, overwriting existing ones. Sorry, they're quite old, but still much better than stock for all campaigns (like stock ones) that do not have their own *planes.dat (mostly derived from crappy stock ones and, as a consequence, with same problems).
If you play Pacific campaigns, you should also edit PacificPlanes.dat and swap first line for F6F-3 and -F5 with that having armament "default" to avoid the Hellcat always starting laden with bombs and rockets!

Besides, installing HSFX 6 and enabling its Expert mode, you'll get rid of "MISSION COMPLETE" pita! LOL!

Cheers,
GB

Good ole' U. S. of A.
I avoid the whole thing, still fly 4.09 with mods. The AI improvements were nice but to me it only added more styles of fighting to the enemy AI, it didn't make them any harder ( Ok, maybe a little harder ) to shoot down. They just have a bigger repertoire of moves and tactics. I still fly and fight much better than the AI. I tried many scenarios in 4.11 in the QMB and found that overall, I still win the fights about the same rate. So that did not compensate for the new overheat model, which I truly hate. After learning to stop overheating as much by flying more carefully, I still did not like the fact that if you did mess up and overheat ( we all do ) that it was nearly impossible to cool the engines back down again. In the rare instances when I goofed and overheated, I was finding it necessary to chop the throttle for way too long just to cool back down. This obviously leave one extremely vulnerable. I refuse to accept that, nor did I feel I should have to shut off overheat in the difficulty menu. The whole thing was just unacceptable to me. No thanks....

Just to be clear...these are the dynamic campaigns that you folks are playing right? The mission design is not the greatest in any of these. It's rather simplistic and broken in many cases. Right off the bat for the Hurricane Singapore campaign for example where the flight distances that DGEN creates are longer than the range of the aircraft itself.

I'd say go and play a hand crafted campaign off of Mission4Today.com or something like that. Quality is hit and miss but there are some excellent campaigns out there. I know I've been replaying many of my own works with the new AI and things are generally ok in most places. I always toned down the waypoint speeds to a cruise setting rather than maximum.

The AI now also suffer from overheat (unlike before) so I wouldn't be surprised if whole squadrons of aircraft were overheating under the new model and then suffering from eventual engine failure.
