MechWarrior II was my first ever 3Dfx game - came bundled with my Righteous 3D card
I still have it, in fact, and recently acquired a working Righteoous 3D Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 cards to have a bash with it on an old PII 450 I was given (I fix people's PCs for nowt and they give me their stuff when they upgrade so I've got lots of old stuff in the attic). (I have that virtual voodoo card, but you can't beat using the real hardware). Still have my old Sidewinder gamepad to play it with, too.
I thought it was brilliant!
Then I bought the add-on Ghost Bear's Legacy. What a disappointment.

That brings back memories. Going off on a bit of a tangent, I think the 3Dfx mech games, combined with the Internet, killed the Virtual World BattleTech centers - does anyone remember them?
We had one in San Diego, and it was crazy expensive ($10 for 10 minutes, which was a lot back then), but was very cool. They had a "bar" area where you could order beverages and snacks, and it had decor that would kind of set the tone, with alien animal skulls, etc. There were screens where people could watch the action of the people currently playing, too.
When playing the game, you'd go sit in a fully enclosed cockpit, with all kinds of buttons, status screens, and a full set of controls, plus you could play with up to 16 other people. We can get most of that at home today, but back in the '90s it was unique and very cool. At the end of the session. you'd get a printout showing your performance.
Here's the cheesy training video they would play while you were waiting for your turn (although Joan Severance is always nice to look at):
Later, they upgraded the systems to the Tesla version, and the graphics improved:

I do remember those and hearing how immerssive they were, just think for the price of 30mins or an hour or two hours now I can have a similar experience at home, gotta love the progress of technology.
Yeah, I'm really considering it. I'm not sure about the controls though, and if I can't use my Warthog and rudder pedals, it just wouldn't be as much fun.

NDA doesn't allow confirming or denying beta features, and I don't see any dev posts confirming in the General forum.
I will say is that this is definitely a beta at this point, and so if you have some specific advanced controls or requirements that will affect whether you enjoy it or not, you might be better off waiting for the open beta to check it out, to avoid getting frustrated, I usually avoid most betas for that reason.
I'm currently writing a total keyboard/mouse override in TARGET script for MechWarrior Online. For the Thrustmaster Warthog. While I cannot disclose any information about the beta's current status, I can say that this script should interpret joystick input that is on par with professional joystick implementation.
It simply translates raw joystick data to how the mouse plays currently in MWO, so I essentially have absolute control in the implementation.
I hopefully will have a decent version of it within a week.

I keep meaning to make a profile for my Cougar, but...frankly...I don't think that a $1000 HOTAS setup is going to make me suck any less at this game.
You're only young once, but you can be immature forever.
I used to play MW2 with joystick, but these days to be honest since I got used to playing MWLL, I am pretty happy playing these mech games using KB+mouse, the amount of fine grain control for aiming torso provided by the mouse works really well for me especially when sniping missile boats from far away...
I could never play the MW games with a joystick. It was like trying to play a FPS with a console controller - too hard to centre and shoot. I use mouse and keyboard.
I'd like to try the warthog profile. I'd still probably use the mouse with the right hand, but I can't stop thinking how cool it would be to be using the rudder pedals for something and of course the Throttles for something else...
Any chance you could pass the WartHog profile? or give tips on how to do one meself?

Eventually I might try my X52 throttle + rudder + mouse for more immersion, but for now I'm happy with the default mouse+KB to be able to jump in for a couple of rounds when I have a few minutes without having to setup any gear, working well for me.
Joystick is digital and not worth it right now, but the throttle on my HOTAS-X is a must have for control for me. I use the rocker for turning and the mouse for demetalizing.
I find the twitch play incorporated lends to those with a mouse far more than the joystick. This doesn't apply to everyone but the majority of people I've played with favor the mouse since the aiming is far more FPS than it is Sim.
