I'm not trying a deep analysis here but what I found a bit curious is that the army soldiers seem to have split up their already small force in the face of a (most probably) numerically superior, well armed enemy. Due to the nature of the terrain it seems unlikely that both groups could actually provide support for each other, and having two instead of one group of allies on the ground probably hasn't made it easier for the air support as well.
