I first used "adlabs6" when I bought IL2 back in 2002 or so, and registered at the UBI forums. I had used it as a non-gaming name for a couple of years prior.

My computer mentor back then introduced me to a modem (what's a modem?) and logging in (what does that mean?). He said use a name to call yourself (what?). He suggested anything would work. Stymied, I asked him to suggest something and he said "reverse your name".

Wish I had a cool story, but I don't.
I made my account here in 2010 specifically for the DCS: A-10C beta, which at the time I expected to play a lot of and be involved with. Now I'm using a name based on a game I don't play.
I've never been one to stick with just one screen name for years at a time. I tend to get tired of them after awhile because none of them ever truly suit me.
I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

Ever since I had to pick a name for my Luftwaffe pilot in Il-2, some 7 or 8 years ago. It's actually a "germanisation" of the contraction of my high school nickname "Barb", which I wad given for growing my first beard. I've been declining it ever since for various character names of various nationalities in different flight sims and games : Van De Barb, De la Barbe, Della Barba, Beard, Darth Barb, Barbessen, Al Baarb...
Cheers

1988, C64 Era. I started to write games, and needed a good name to sign them. I was trying hard at that time to find a good nick, if you are a programmer, you cannot have a name like Kurucz Pter. Doesn't sound too cool and I had to be cool at that time, I was 14. Sztaniol in Hungarian is the aluminium foil.(I think the word has latin origins, but never tried to find out) So my name came from an accident with a chocolate bar in a tinfoil wrapping. I even remember the exact product, it was called 'Sport'. Here it is if you are interested: During heavy thinking, I remove the paper only, and had a huge bite, with the tinfoil still on it (it is far from a pleasant feeling, if you experienced it, you know), and voila, I had a name which was meaningless, but sounded cool. Immediately globalised it from Sztaniol to Staniol, and using it since then. 24 years. Phew.

1999. Since the Panzer Elite forums.
When I was a kid I was fascinated by one of my dad's books, "Luftkmpfe" (air combat), a story about military aviation from its humble beginnings to the present. And the name of the Parabellum MG of the German WW1 aircraft somehow sounded mighty cool in my ears.

Great story! Did you ever contemplate the name "Barbarossa"?

On the computer I have mine since Medal of Honor; Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942. I only slightly change it if necessary. Originally my nickname was from my Military service in 1993/1994, so it's been in use for almost 20 years!
