Try the following:

1: don't slam the power forward, increase it gently.
2: lock your tailwheel by holding your stick aft of neutral (aka hold back the stick a little)
3: keep your eye on the ball. On one of your instruments there should be a little black ball which indicates your sideslip.
Keep that ball centered by tapping the rudder

I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

Howdy,
Torque is not your friend... and the P51 has plenty of it.
As per training, add a little right rudder trim before takeoff.
The way I go is to gently apply power and maintain a little back pressure on the stick keeping the tail wheel locked until rudder bites in, then stick back to center, and the tail raise, all along I apply power progressively. Tiny rudder corrections along. Once the tail is up, the plane then lifts off more or less by itself if enough power. can't remember numbers right now but I never go full throttle, not necessary I think. Well, at least not with a light load.
Slight aileron input to keep wings level, gentle climb, gear up and off you go until it's time to trim for level flight at cruising speed.

Cheers,
Slug

Don't try to lift the tail until about 100 mph.

It's not all your fault of course. With the current beta the rudder is a bit weak at speeds where the tail would normally fly itself off. To get around this you must do as they say above and keep the tailwheel in contact with the runway. Also, I find using a "zoomed out" field of view helpful in recognizing lateral drift early.

I'm not 100% convinced the propwash is acting on the rudder as it should. Even at a complete stop, the propwash should give the rudder some control authority, especially when as throttle is applied. If this effect is modelled, it's much tinier than I expect.

I don't know about the prop wash either, but this is one tricky bird to get in the air. If you think you can just slam the throttle and go like some other sims..you're wrong. I found out the hard way and before finding this thread. Thanks for the tips!

I have a real problem getting a good take off that I can do twice. It seems that out of the blue the plane starts a skid that I can't stop. I use the graphic display to see what the controls are inputting and they seem to be doing what I want. I have the flight sim set on difficult. Does anyone use a different version of the flight settings? I can't believe that the real plane would act this way. Maybe its a beta thing and will improve with the next patch. Other than this problem I love this plane.

When you raise the tail on a tailwheel aircraft, the rotation of the prop causes a strong turning torque on the aircraft. This is usually counter-acted with opposite rudder. In this case, it seems like the rudder doesn't have enough control authority to stop the turning, hence the out-of-control skid.

Of course, with the prop creating that much torque, you'd think the propwash would give the rudder much more authority...

I always set rudder trim to 5 degrees right and up the throttle fairly quickly (but smoothly) so that I usually take off in 3-point, i.e. no long roll-outs for me. No idea if that is realistic or best for the type (I too think the rudder propwash seems a bit light) but it works ok.

Try just 2.5 deg of trim. Seems trim is getting doubled at the moment.

Phew! Finally managing take-off and landing with a good chance of walking away rather than being carried away. (hey I only got it yesterday, so that ain't too shabby.)

Been practicing with the Take-off solo mission, doing a circuit and landing again.
Though I will try a different field from batumi as having a bunch of trees at the other end when you come in to land is a bit of a pig. Not to mention the hills and powerlines that are in the way. Tend to skim the trees but still end up bouncing as I'm too high. But she stops quick, so will try floating further down rather than pushing for the threshold.
Gave a bunch of passengers in a bus a good thrill through as I passed almost directly over them as I crossed the threshold - who thought putting a frecking bus lane right on the threshold was a good idea?

Cheers
Stuntie.
