Did it sound like they said FC3 would require both LOMAC and DCS World? or was it just me?

Nope, not just you- I'm fairly certain that's exactly what Wags was saying. Remember, Ubisoft still owns the intellectual properties attached to LOMAC, which was why you still had to have that disc to buy FC2. It's been an ongoing discussion on the ED forums for a couple of months now.

I hate to be "that guy", but this interview practically told us nothing. Every response is "perhaps at a later time", "we can't say anything about that yet"... banghead

Unbelievably annoying.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

That is correct and it makes perfect sense.

You need LockOn installed due to rights issue with Ubisoft. Obviously you would need DCS World installed as FC3 is a module that is installed to DCS World. Once the FC3 module is installed to DCS World, LockOn can then be uninstalled, as is the case at present when installing FC2 - same procedure.

But Ubisoft's legal rights couldn't possible extend beyond the name, unless they cut a really bad deal.

Wouldn't it be easier to just wrap up the eventual planes, missions and whatnot under a new name and just treat it as a new module.

Having to install a standalone, old product that isn't compatible with DCS world just to install a module into DCS world seems highly confusing.

Go back in time 3 years and the answer to the Apache question was "yes". sigh

As for the LOMAC thing, we're not privy to the details of Ubi's agreement with ED as to what exactly constitutes LOMAC. It could have been defined as having all or most of the planes in that first release in a single sim in that era. I'm sure whatever it is, it's not easily wrangled out of or ED would've done that long ago.

I'll just say that as much as I want those planes in DCS World interacting with the A-10C, there will need to be some serious updating other than just "FC2 with A-10C's/DCS World's environment." BS2 had enough added to it that I thought it worth the $20 upgrade I paid on top of the $50 BS1 cost me (I bought it early from ED, no Steam sale for me!) I paid $40-50 for LOMAC (can't recall now), $30 for FC1 I think (also can't recall), and then $30 for FC2 for the BS1 MP link as well as the fixes I wanted since FC's 1.12 patch.
Of course, if FC3 is just FC2 ported to DCS World, it should be cheap. If it gets feature creep, though, we could easily see another $30 for it. frown

LoMAC had a pack with all the expansions for like $20 at target or something

I hope they bump the textures, the SU-25 Cockpit textures make me wanna vomit.

I wouldn't have minded hearing a little more about DCS:CA, i.e. if there were plans to introduce realistic fire control systems.

Hi HogDriver,

Sorry the interview wasn't helpful for you.

We knew some of the questions probably couldn't be answered but we felt there was value in asking them so there would be a single record of where DCS is at this point-and-time. Questions that Matt couldn't/wouldn't comment on still have value because they were asked and we know the current status. As somebody once said wink "everything is subject to change" so in a fluid and flexible situation, its good to get it all on the same page (literally).

Great interview guys! Although he didnt say much, Matt did give some clarification on World and the future. I did like the questions about a First person shooter and sea combat. I kinda liked the answers too.

AS for FC3 and LOMAC. I think the issue is the game engine for FC is still the same as LOMAC. While I still hate UBI for dropping LOMAC like a bad habit. Without it we wouldnt have DCS. I was kinda hoping for a install sorta like BMS and Falcon 4. Just have the disc in the drive and go from there.

This is just business, and nothing to worry about. I know the requirements to have the old LOMAC is annoying, but it isn't a huge price to pay IMHO.

I'll say two things:

Just putting these into World alone is a huge update, because you get things from DCSW now that can create richer, more interesting missions, as well as other things (tm).
ED always looks to add things to existing products when doing updates. Sometimes small things, sometimes big things. Until they finalize a list of feature updates they won't say anything. Undoubtedly, some people will appreciate them, and some will not.

Obviously, you buy what you feel is worth the price for you. Even if you don't buy FC3, as long as servers host a DCSW aircraft that you own, you will still be able to play on those servers.

Heeeeeeell no. It isn't the same engine. It is similar because one evolved from the other, but the two aren't compatible or comparable. And DCSW is even farther away. This is about business agreements, not about technology.

Guess I'm curious about this question and response:

Quote:
Q: Will DCS World modules (is it fair to call them DLC?) be available on Steam or the download through Steam?

Matt: That is our intent, but contrary to what most gamers think, just because a company pitches Valve to sell a title on Steam doesn’t mean it will happen. More and more so, it is getting difficult to get Steam to pick up titles by small developers, like Eagle Dynamics. As such, we are also working with other digital distributors like GameFly and Origin. Of course, all our titles are for sale on our web site, and this is our preferred means of sale.

Specifically, because Steam (especially vs Origin) has proven to be something of a godsend to Indie developers. Indeed, they have an entire section of their online store dedicated to "indie" titles.

And in any case, we already have DCS: A-10 and DCS: Black Shark (1) on the store. Once you have a title there, I've never heard of Steam turning down DLC for it. Heck, there are more than NINETY (90!!) DLC modules for 'Train Simulator' on Steam.

This would really seem to be the natural fit for 'DCS: World' - almost that exact same model!

(And let me add another gripe at present about the inability to buy "Black Shark 2" on Steam. Have you tried pitching it as just DLC for BS1? That would kinda be accurate to describe what it is, so while I get that Valve wasn't keen on you selling it as a distinct standalone title...that does makes sense, after all. It requires BS1, it's effectively a very large expansion for it...call it DLC for DS1 and re-submit it! I want to buy it, but I want to do so through Steam...)
