Many very good pilots ( I'm not one...lol ) fly without Track IR, mapping snap views to joystick buttons is one way of doing it.

Look into Freetrack freetrack, you will find that head tracking is much (by a order of magnitude) cheaper than TrackIR. I use Freetrack and it works like a charm

If you can't afford Trackir, or just don't want to get it, do what I do. I was getting my butt thorougly kicked because I couldn't look around fast enough with the coolie hat on my Saitek X45. Started using the mouse to look around. Problem solved. The mouse is on my left hand and I use the mouse wheel for the throttle. Works great! You will never use the pov switch, on your stick, again. I found out that my gas and break pedal setup for my driving games works as rudder pedals, too. It's how I fly all of my flight sims, now.

Smokin, really, its not as hard as you would think. Understand, though, that I'm not flying with the mouse, just using it to look round. My right hand is on the control stick and feet on the rudder pedals like everyone else. Anyone who could be a succcess at this sim by controlling the airplanes with a mouse would have my respect, too! Lol!

Just thinking out loud, but... Lately I've been making skins for RoF and... you know. What about cleaning the textures?
I mean, erase everything from the texture file. You would be able to see through the wings and structures. I would imagine that you'd still have the wooden bathtub the pilot sit in. But it's a small step forward in the direction you wanted, no?
Of course that would force you to only play offline (personalized textures are strictly MOD ON) but still. Be mindful this could lead to negative training, going back to play "Cockpit On" would result in increased hardship.
I, for one, can prepare you such a skin in 10 minutes...

I built my Freetrack setup for around £7 ($11) and that was only for the power adapter because I didn't like the idea of always changing batteries. It's a damn sight cheaper than TIR and works just as good. All you need is the Freetrack Software, a compatible webcam, an old baseball cap a bit of wire and three IR LEDs like SFH485P or equivalent. I got mine from Farnell. I used some wire from an old IDE ribbon cable. Because I used a power adapter switchable between 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 and 12 volts I didn't need resistors. The voltage worked out at 4.5 so I tried that but the LED's got a little hot to the touch so I dropped it down to 3v and it's worked cool and flawlessly ever since. The stated voltages on these cheapy power adapters read a little lower than the actual output, so be aware of that. Build one, you won't be sorry. Cheap, easy to construct, functional and 6dof. Worth spending a little time setting it up accurately in the software.
