I've been staying in this city for the last couple of days. It has been an eye-opener to see how people live here, compared to where I am from. This city is old, and there is a monument here erected by one of the first western explorers who visited here. It lies in the central 'geographic divisions' of this country, and is the largest city in said region and was the first capital of the country after the western conquest. View from my hotel room. As my hotel is one of the landmarks of the city, it can't be seen. But it's two main towers lights up the night sky. Lazying on a wednesday morning at a nearby beach resort. The water held a perfect temperature for swimming. Ah, bliss... Where in the world is MadDog?

New place, new pictures. We are looking for an island this time. I am staying on the second biggest island in this group of islands. The biggest one known for these things: The furry little critters (not monkeys). A quick river cruise up a river to give you the feeling forthe interior. And most famously for these hills, there are about a thousand of them. Sunrise at the beach of the island I'm on (pic copied from Farsebook, so bad version). Today we took a boat ride to do some dolphin spotting (hugely disappointing). We also went snorkling at this island, one of the most fun things I've ever done. A happy MadDog on the way back from snorkling. We stopped at a second island which had like a mile long sandy beach and did some swimming. Mucho enjoyable. You get the tropical island feel. Definately not deep water. So where in the world is MadDog this weekend?

Some things that makes you raise your eyebrows here: - At 6pm everything stops in a shopping mall, as a prayer is said over the speaker system. I was warned about this so wasn't baffled when it happened, but still. It does not matter if you are talking to the staff in a store, they will stop and bow their heads. The polite thing is of course to respect their customs and stay quiet and still. I've seen a couple of tourists who haven't known what was going on and was wandering the walkways, before noticing that everyone else was stopped, and got the clue - The amount of armed security guards. Going into a shopping mall you are frisked, and your bag probed and scanned with a metal detector. There are signs everywhere (tourist attractions etc) with "Please leave your firearm behind" or to that effect. Still, having security guard with pump-action shotguns guard the entrance to the mall is.... disconcerting. A lot of the stores also employs armed guards at their entrances inside the mall.

They aren't a chocolatey now though. Should've seen it when we had El Nino! MadDog, as you probably know by now, the Philippines is a predominantly Roman Catholic/Christian nation... divorce is not legal and so is abortion, unless done on a married woman with heart problems or something. That "six-o'clock" prayer is one of those things we do. Some TV channels even stop programs at 3pm for the three-o'clock prayer. Those "armed guards" are just rent-a-cops. Unlike UK, it is easy to get a knife/gun/weapon in the Philippines. Have they showed you a "bolo" yet? Hence the need for armed guards. Plus CCTV in stores isn't exactly implemented very well, so they need the MKII eyeball The good thing is those guards are usually friendly and can point you to the nearest exit/toilet/whatever if you get lost. Go into a National Bookstore shop and it is usually the guard who also mans the baggage counter. As to that frisking/searching, it is supposedly done to "deter terrorism." Obviously in Manila where people are packed like sardines, well, you know how a stick of dynamite can ruin everyone's day. In the smaller cities/malls, this is done just "because," you will notice that some of the guards don't even search the bags properly! Or they don't know C4 if they see it, or won't see it if you wrap it on a plastic bag. It's like they're looking into your bag looking for a bomb-with-a-ticking-timer sort of thing, unless they find what they recognize, they wave you through.
