Personally, It's not my favorite period, and I was hoping for something eles. However, being a fan of the series, I will most likely buy it anyway. Maybe I can get into this version better.
Cheers

YEAH! Just heard about this too. This is the one many have been waiting for....and hoping it does the original justice (no reason why not). The Total War games are great....and this is by far my favourite era (though I like Napoleonic and Medieval too) Really looking forward to this.

Shogun and Shogun 2 Total War are by far my favorites from Creative Assembly but I think I will most likely buy Rome Total War 2.

I would love to see one set in the Civil War time period.

So would I but I don't think the Total War games lend themselves well to a scenario/conflict where there are only two sides/factions/combatants. Perhaps as a DLC it might be feasable for Creative Assembly.

What would you like to see instead?

Modders have already been on it for quite a while now mate, haven't been following much but I understand its still very much WIP.

That is utterly impressive! Is it a mod for Empire Total War?
edit: Never mind. I found out it's a mod for Napoleon Total War.

Napoleon Total War Panz, and yes the models are great....Impressive work. I've been getting quite interested in the American Civil War after watching a great 5-6 part documentary on PBS about it, so would give it a try myself too.

Not another Rome. Creative Assembly needs to get more creative.
Well, to be fair, although this is not the period I wanted to see them return to, it does follow a logical progression. The've done a Shogun 1 and 2, a Medieval 1 and II, so Rome was the next oldest game they had not revisited.
Having just done a Shogun sequel, I think they ruled out any other Asian based warfare. This would have left them with either a 19th century game (Victorian War or Empire II) or returning to antiquity as they did. The TW games are at their best when they cover large time periods that encompass many cultures, which in turn allows the player to re-write history.
The tactical side is also about large set piece battles or siege assaults filled with massed formation of combatants. That's why they will probably never venture past the 19th century.

Agreed. I love the concept of large strategy maps with smaller 3d combat maps. It would be interesting to see if it could be ever adapted to more modern warefare. Total War: Hearts of Iron would be epic.

Speaking of going back to antiguity, why not the Alexander the Great era or Greece? Too esoteric maybe?

There was an Alexander expansion for the first Rome. I have it, but have never played it, and I don't think it was as popular as the Barbarian expansion.
I don't think WW I or any 20th century war would work for a total war style game. Although WW I is called a world war it was fought over a fairly small geographic area--mostly around the borders of modern Germany---not like WW II which truly did span a lot of the globe. WW I was also not characterized as about empire building or conquering lands, which has always been one of the main goals of any total war franchise.
Theaters of war for WW I
1. the Western front---between France and Germany 2. the Eastern front---between Russia and Prussia/Germany 3. the Italian front---between Italy and Austria 4. Galipoli------------Southern tip of Turkey allied with Germany
That's pretty much it besides the war at sea. Of course there were a few colonial skirmishes, but largely anything outside of the areas mentioned were bloodless.
So now we have all but eliminated the strategic factor of any total war game, let's consider the tactical side. As I said before the tactical side of the TW games have always been about big set piece battles between large regimental size formations of men, or siege assaults of fixed fortifications.
WW II battles were characterized by stalemated trench warfare broken up occasionally when idiot generals sent huge numbers of hapless young men to their deaths by charging them across no man's land into waiting machine gun and artillery fire---all to gain and then subsequently lose a few miles of largely worthless territory. Add in to that mix--barbed wire, land mines, tanks, gas, and airplanes and you have a very nasty war, but one especially not suited to the Total war style of game play.
Just my personal opinion, and you know what your proctologist says about opinions.

Medieval Total War II was the last game that allowed total conversion. Sure you can do minor things but they basically gave the finger to the mod community after MTWII came out.
Can't really see WWI total war; but American Civil war might work well. There's little option for diplomacy but aside from that there's naval action, sieges, and war of movement...
Might be interesting to do something like Mongols Total War. Gengis Khan established one of the largest empire but I'm not too sure how much it would differ from Rome TW apart frOm the obvious superficial differences.
