I have been having problems with Ironfront since the latest patch. After playing the game anywhere from 5-15 minutes my computer will turn off completely, no blue screen, just turns off like the power went out. It only happens when playing this game and, since Monday night, Arma 2 as well.

I looked at the Arma and Ironfront.rpt files. The Arma one doesn't give me anything worthwhile but the Ironfront one ends with this: "ErrorMessage: Corrupted data detected."

I thought that perhaps the patch screwed something up so I uninstalled and deleted everything having to do with Ironfront and then reinstalled - same problem.

In talking with some IT friends we determined that perhaps it was my CPU overheating so I have been using Core Temp to log my temperatures - they have not gone over 43d Celsius so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

In my google searches I have been unable to come up with anything so I thought I would expand into the SimHQ brain. Maybe you guys can find or think of something I haven't.

Try an overnight run of Memtest. I once had a problem that only happened while playing Half Life 2. PC would just crash.

The short Memtest runs showed all clear. But when I let it run for 12 to 15 hours, I started getting the red.

Some more info about your system would help. But this seems to be your power supply overheating. It's the protective system kicking in. Clear out dust from any dust filter and the power supply fan.

I failed to mention that I had run a short memtest and no errors were found. I will give an all night test a try if cleaning out all dust bunnies doesn't solve anything.

Have you added a new video card recently?

If you added a newer video card in the recent past, it could be that other games work fine with it but IF44 puts higher demands on it and your power supply might not have enough juice to handle the video card at full load.

No new parts in the past 6 months - at least. I can't remember exactly what is in my PC so I will post my specs tonight when I can check it out.

It just seems odd to me that Iron Front ran fine before the patch. And Arma 2 has run fine on my machine since it came out. These issues are recent - seemingly linked somehow to the latest Iron Front patch. But the timing my just be coincidence.

I cleaned out everything pretty well and the problem continues. It wasn't that dusty to begin with, my computer room is hardwood and the cat has been gone for a few years. With the cat around, it was pretty bad.

Then i believe it is your PSU. A sudden power down is either PSU overheating or it's about to die. That is my experience as a technician smile

Raggz,

I suppose that is a very good possibility. I will have to see if I can get my hands on a power supply.

Adlabs,

I ran Memtest all night and it passed with flying colors so it isn't my memory.

FYI - I also posted my problem in the Official Iron Front bug reporting thread on their forums. We shall see if they come up with anything.

Hi Biff,

If you passed Memtest all night, then as Raggz mentions, power may be the culprit.

I know there are some system graphics demos out there, but I have never used them. With some tool like that, I wonder if you could create a heavy load for the CPU and GPU and then see if you experience a similar shutdown?

This comes to mind:

Like I say though, no idea if that would be any useful indicator.

That's a thought. If I get a chance tonight I may run that. Or maybe this: http://www.futuremark.com/

It still sounds to me like the processor overheating. Have you tried running Prime95? That will really tax your processor. Is your CPU overclocked at all, and what kind of CPU cooler do you have?

We had nothing comparable.

I am using the stock CPU cooler and I have not overclocked it at all.

I ran Prime95 using the test that is supposed to max the CPU and power consumption and it passed. Looking at Core Temp, the processor never went over 61 degrees Celsius and my computer didn't shut down.

I also ran a benchmark in 3DMark06. It ran fine, here are my results if you are interested: http://3dmark.com/3dm06/16709393

I ran that demo as well. It was kinda entertaining watching thousands of frogs walking around in platform shoes carrying rocks and eating shrooms and then passing out. smile My PC handled it fine.

Well Biff, I dunno.

I guess you could see about settings maybe? Adjust them up or down, and see how things go.

After my Win7 HDD failed a few weeks back and I had to reinstall, I got the latest driver for my ATI card. Immediately started having graphics glitches in Arma 2. So I went back to an older driver, and things are fine now.

I don't know either.

I installed the latest drivers for my graphics card after I started having these issues. It doesn't seem like the drivers had an effect for me.

I'm not sure what else to do other than wait for the next patch and hope it fixes my issue.

A few days after giving up and waiting for a patch I noticed a strange vibration coming from my PC. I opened it up and saw my video card bouncing around. I took it out and noticed that one of the fan blades had disappeared. So I ordered a new VGA cooler and finally got it installed last night. I am happy to report that I am now able to play Iron Front for hours on end again. smile Apparently it was a heat issue with my video card. Strange that an overheating video card would shut down the whole machine, but I guess that was it.

Thanks for all of your help! I am looking forward to seeing you on the battlefield.

Wow, never seen that one before!

Glad you're up and running again Biff, hope to see you soon.
