Hi all

In a long while finally a game that passes my DRM check (no online activation...) and seems to have a very interesting subject matter.

If anyone has time to answer three questions I'd be most grateful:

1) Is it any good in single player? Knowing ArmaII AI, it struggled to handle complex environments (i.e. rubble in a city street...) and it certainly struggled to use complex game features like added in ACE mod. So as this one has towable guns, deployable MG positions, complex street layouts - can the AI deal with it? Can they deal with the advanced tank battle features?

2) Has the interface and command style been correctly adapted for WW2? I.e. no ability to "radio" individual unit members half a map away, no constant "radio chat". Can we get original german voice acting?

3) How big for a standard game install? The system requirements listed online vary wildly....

Thanks!

RS

according to Steam... 9.08 GB

1. No, same issues, same stupid AI... need to be micro-managed to succeed. Still not as bad as it was when ArmA2 was first released... but going from point A to point B with a simple follow me command, half will get lost, in battle half will die within the first 2 mins... been my experience so far.

2. don't know... it's more WW2 based, so could be correct... the beta I previewed was in german, so i assume in release too... but I play the (englsih) version.

Thanks Magnum

I really lost the fun with the Invasion 1944 mod for A2 as it became pretty much unplayable. I guess I'll need a few gameplay vids to see what the AI is doing...

I'm playing for the red side, the AI are like fleas with no sense, all over the map. I've played Arma series very little so I don't know how to manage them properly, SP no fun so far.

Cheers,
Dirk.

Air warfare is obviously move in the right direction. Though you won't get your engine overheated yet lol.

Cheers,
Dirk.

Single player has never been ArmA's strong suit. Ever.

My single player experience has run into trouble. My German English campaign is hung at the tank training grounds. After arriving to fire on the targets with the MG, I am ordered out of the tank. From there I can never get back in.

I've yet to figure out a way around this.

Who told you the game didn't need an online activation? My GamersGate version used ProtectDisc where I needed to activate a key the first time I launched the game. No idea if there are activation limits or what, didn't see anything indicating as such. I'm not sure how other versions of the game are different.

Looks like you won't be getting the game then...

1: I've played the first 3-4 missions as the Germans so far. I would say the SP is "OK", but nothing special. A lot of that is tutorial kind of stuff. Could be better with user created missions later?

Ai suffers from the same problems that date back to the original Operation Flashpoint. Example being that ai drivers struggle to navigate the simplest paths sometimes... It might take you 2 minutes to drive 200-300 meters, because the dumbkopf driver keeps having to stop, back up, turn, go forward, stop, back up again, go forward...

Haven't really got to try much of the other things you asked about yet.

2: (Radio Comms) Nope. Part of one tutorial mission has you ordering your squadmate to get in a car and then drive a few hundred meters away. You then have to order him back. Maybe the car has a radio? I don't know, but it looks like I was able to order my squad when they weren't within what I would call "shouting" range.

(German Language) Yes if you choose to play the German (original) campaign, you will get German voices with English subtitles. That's what I chose to make it feel more realistic.

3. When looking in my install directory it says 8.96 GB. (GamersGate Version)

And YES YOU DO HAVE TO ACTIVATE ONLINE. At least with the GamersGate version. Read Phazon's post above mine.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

Thanks guys. So Gamersgate version means you ordered a physical DVD and it still requires activation?

I saw a lot of discussion online and also reference to one or two working No-CDs, so I assumed it was uncomplicated like Arma.

Gamersgate is digital only.

I'm pretty sure all versions of the game (digital and retail) use the same activation method, perhaps maybe the Steam version but that still counts as DRM too I guess.

Well, for the digital version to need a key makes sense. For the DVD I'm hoping for a simple disk check. But it seems right now the SP is not particularly strong.

I'm not sure what the retail version uses. Someone else would have to answer that.

The single-player campaign might currently have some issues, but nothing is stopping me from fully enjoying the mission editor and making any single-player or multi-player scenario I can think up of.

I play a lot of Sandbox missions in A2 also, but is the AI in IFL up to good SP? Some statements above don't sound quite like that.
