I do not know why people hate Origin so much. I remember all this hate when Steam first came out and now no one (hardly) complains. I guess Origin gets the hate until something new comes along.

It's not hate, it's genuine concern for the datamining that EA does, likely violating a bunch of national laws in the process.

Mace, you yourself had issues with these systems, yet you continue to defend them. I don't get it.

Lol I knew you would reply Colonel biggrin

I didn't have problems with the usage of them. I get annoyed at the OTT 'conspiracy theory' rubbish that gets foisted on these services. I have heard that it was proven that Origin does not contain spyware and acts purely as a place to download and store EA games.

It was never proven that it does "not contain" spyware. It is still unclear why it's scanning which folders or registry yet - the only "official" word of that is from EA.

And what you underestimate still is the risk of lost privacy, which is not "paranoid conspiracy" but actually real danger. For example Google now has started to cross-examine the data generated by ALL their services. Can you imagine how much Google knows about you based on your searches, maps, email, phone book, docs... and ultimatly your credit card in their app store which makes it personalizable?

EA and all these giants are playing to win all our private data. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is their business today.

Origin ties your Bioware/Battlelog/Autolog/whatever EA game account into your Origin account.

I do not like this. For example, I bought Need for Speed 2010. Turns out I do not like the game very much. Now that it is tied to my Origin account (without my permission) I can not sell it. Had I bought the game originally from Steam/Origin/whatever, that would be different, as I already would have known it was tied to a non-sell able account. However, when I bought NFS, I did not get it through Origin or want to install it on Origin.

However, Origin has not yet added BFBC2 to my Origin account...

I just disabled origin from auto start, not because of security concerns but because i don't like to have processes running when i don't need them .
It only added NFS hot pursuit (because of the autolog) up to now no other EA games have been added.

I always do that with anything that I install if possible, Steam included.

There are only a few processes I enable at start up. Windows LIVE messenger, MSE, and whatever Nvidia needs to run. Nothing else. Every time I install a program I check and make sure no junk was set to start up automatically.

Just for the record, I use Steam. But with clenched teeth.

I'd rather not have to use it at all and once I'm finished with Skyrim I might very well deinstall it for good. When I purchased Skyrim I thought you have to use Steam only once, as it turned out that was not the case.

I'm just not as vocal about the brave new world of gaming as the Colonel. And Origin? Never ever, I will strictly not purchase any game being linked to this. And that is imo the only way to persuade manufacturers and publishers to look for alternatives, if the products don't sell so well.

Oh it's gonna get worse. Soon the only way to play new games is gonna be a Set Top Box. The cable industry has proven this is the only way to slow down piracy. The head of the Riaa used to be a Senator so he has already spent many years on the hill and knows exactly who to bribe oops excuse me whos campaign to donate to to get what they want.

The Megaupload guy went down not for what he was doing but for what he was about to release. I music sharing program that would have bankrupted the industry but yet put money in the pockets of independent publishers them not to allow us the ability to buy a used game just like I do with cars boats and damn near anything else I purchase is WRONG on so many levels but yet no one says a word.

The online pass that is now an extra 10.00 for a used game is nothing but greed. It's like saying if you buy a used car fine but you gotta pay an extra 1000.00 to drive it out of the state you bought it in.

The video game industry now makes more than movies and if the cycle runs it's usual pace it won't take them long to milk the cow and screw it all up just like they do everything else.

Being a gamer since we chased red dots has given me many years of amazement seeing what we have now compared to a few years ago.

Currently you have company's like Nintendo changing their business model to say to any publisher... Now matter how many copy's you send us to sell you will not be paid for any until we sell 6000 copy's. Many company's have already stated that last year it took them 9 months to get enough money back to break even and will NEVER work on another Nintendo game again.

Mark my words times are changing. The big fish have pretty much gobbled p the little fish and a monopoly is coming and with the RIAA and congress in their pocket the only ne's who will come out ahead are them.

Good Luck
Mr Wags

Oh and if you are tired of Origin and own the game your playing you can get a fixed exe to bypass Origin altogether with a quick google. Just Saying smile
