My current screen is wide 1920x1080 which is 16:9 but I am getting really enjoyable results using the d3d windower which fixes both mouse stuttering and the target selection map hassles.
My hook.ini allows me to select my eaw.exe from either my GameRanger folder (1.28E/F) or my 1.3 folder which I am using for the EAW 1.3 development.

EnableExtraKey=0Because width and height are set to zero the game uses the natural size of the game selection screens (1024x768), and the size of the display set in my eaw.ini file which I have deliberately set to 1680x1050. The selection screens have no distortion, and the ingame height just fits beautifully on my screen.
