Amazing video.
Wasn't the only Battleship a U-boat claimed, don't forget HMS Royal Oak @ Scapa.

I've only ever seen still pictures of that, I didn't know this was filmed. So sad I agree on the comments below the video. Just goes to prove what I've always said, there should be a license for breeding. There is so much awesomeness in the related videos column!
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

btw. was the wreck of Barham ever discovered?
@ semmern:
Don`t know if awsomeness is the right word. I`ve seen a video of a British bomber falling from the carrier due to the hook failing and the pilot drowned because he couldn`t open the canopy. A very sobering view.

There were more allied warships sunk, including aircraft carriers: http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/largest.htmlA lot were also damaged and out of the war for longer times, e.g. the USS Malaya. I read v. Tiesenhausen's report about the sinking, the crew spotted the 3 battleships and destroyer screen at 20 kilometers and went to periscope depth, but only at the last moment the battle group changed course with HMS Barham then running in front of U-331's torpedo tubes. U-boats are difficult to spot at periscope depth, ASDIC/SONAR does not work, additionally a battleship group generates too much noise to hear anything via hydrophones. U-331 almost sunk afterwards when going deep to evade the searching destroyers, the main depth gauge had jammed and instead of the indicated 30 meters they were at 250, still trying to get deeper. When the nervous bow watch reported the bow gauge showing 250 meters they managed to hold the boat at 280 meters, the bow already being below 300. The boat was almost a wreck afterwards, both propshafts misaligned by the pressure and noisy, but they got away. Very sobering, thanks for posting. Catfish

It is still the only British battleship sunk at sea by a submarine.

The Yorktown and Shinano are two Pacific theatre carriers I can think of that were sunk by subs. Quite a few went down due to subs. Taiho, probably the best of the IJN carriers was sunk by a submarine. One fish in fact. Shokaku, Pearl Harbor survivor took four or five fish and went down. Unryu, based on the Hiryu was sunk by submarines. The Japanese Navy also lost a couple of battleships to submarines. The BB Kongo was sunk by submarines (coincidentally the Kongo was the last battleship made for Japan by the British) The former battleship Asahi was sunk (a veteran of Tsushima). The submarine fleet was very effective against the Japanese navy, sinking a sizeable portion of the Japanese battle fleet and damaging many more.

It is still the only British battleship sunk at sea by a submarine. Thanks for reading my posting properly semmern The Royal Oak was anchored at Scapa and destroyed in a very daring u-boat attack in 1939.

The submarine fleet was very effective against the Japanese navy, sinking a sizeable portion of the Japanese battle fleet and damaging many more. And then on the other side, Japanese subs sank the CVs Yorktown and Wasp, the CA Indianapolis, and the CL Juneau.
