Struggling to see any real benefit of this over the A2A P51D in FSX, where you CAN get appropriate scenery and airfields etc etc.
Still, if its cheap enough... smile
I note rocket and bomb mounting points on the screenshots - did Mustangs carry rockets during WW2? I know they did in Korea...
At least a few Korean scenarios should be possible using the mission editor and the available terrain.
Cheers

You've just stated in your second paragraph the real benefit of DCS:P-51. This is their first aircraft in the Legendary Series so I'd expect more prop dogfighting in the future.

AS for FM and how detailed DCS v A2A versions are we won't know until it's released.

Well, some of us do think FSX is a little pointless . . . nothing to shoot down or blow up wink But, to be quite serious, FSX is designed for just flying around, and one of the cool things is flying over different (virtual) places. DCS, while nice looking, just doesn't have the breadth of world area coverage, and isn't inherently designed with civilian flying in mind (and yes, some of us do find FSX-style flying boring, at least on a desktop). I think people are just more curious than anything else. A P-51 add-on to a modern era sim, while interesting for some, is probably not going to generate alot of enthusiasm, or initial sales, among the "masses." On the other hand, a full-fledged WWII/Korea sim, even with just one plane, would seem to good to be true, especially after the debacle of CloD. Humans generally don't like uncertainty, and we are very curious about this.

You technical stick pilot guys should be real excited about this, you are not going to find better programmed flight models or damage models anywhere else on the PC.

Here are a list of Flying Legends aircraft on their website:

Airworthy Aircraft:

Bearcat
Corsair
Curtiss P-40B
Gladiator
Harvard
Hawk
Hellcat
Mustang TF-51D
Nimrod
Spitfire V
Spitfire XIV
Staggerwing
Wildcat

Restorations:

Beaufighter
CR.42
La-11
Sea Fury
Spitfire IX
Spitfire XXII
Thunderbolt P-47G

If this thing is successful, you might see a good portion of those for DCS Flying Legends on the PC!

Look at the P-51 on their website: http://fighter-collection.com/images/vel1.jpg and compare it to the 2nd screen shot on the first page.

As per the section I bolded, the guy that did most of the FM testing for Il2, Ivank had also flown the P51d, the limitations unfortunately will be with the processing power required to model everything accurately. Its an odd choice with no adversary, they should have released these in pairs, P51 v FW190 or something similar, Spit v 109 with DCS attention to detail would be great.

The limitation was that it was a survey sim, and tried to model many aircraft in a short period of time. A proper FM takes about a man-year to create - per plane. This is why survey sims will not be as representative of the real aircraft's capabilities as study sims.

Big, heavy, but nevertheless nimble, long-ranged and unspeakably beautiful - the nearest approach to a 1940s prop-driven Su-27/33 counterpart smile

We all have our favorites and the Mustang, while a beautiful aircraft, dosn't float my boat so to speak. The hornet looks like a nice aircraft but I would prefer something a bit older like a
Westland Whirlwind http://www.whirlwindfighterproject.org/ or if something a bit more modern then an English Electric Lightning and those two are still my favourite aircraft of all time.

must have a skyraider sim.

As for this p51, i don't get the point of this at all, not one bit. Seems like a total waste.

Ruh, I think the important thing to remember here is that the P-51 is not made to compete in the current DCS theatre. The fact that it works with A10 and BS2 is just a bonus, but this aircraft is the first of many along the Flying Legends line that the ED guys are rolling out. Just imagine Lock On when it came out, but this time it is one aircraft at a time, instead of the 6 (or was it 8?) aircraft that Lock On started with.

Given that we are still effectively in the same theatre that LOMAC (and probably Flanker) started in, I can't see DCS ever producing the full 1940's Britain/France/Germany theatre that these planes require. I can see them just remaining a novelty.
But hope to be wrong smile
Cheers

Well there is no true combat in FSX so would you rather have an A/C in that sim or in this one? At least here we can blow stuff up. I dig where ED is going with this and hope it turns into a bigger project for them, these are first steps toward a battlefield simulator. I can't wait to see what the JTAC add on will bring in functionality.

Actually, we need the A6M Zero and the F-14 Tomcat next in the DCS environment......

Then we can have the scene from The Final Countdown !

It is the fastest production piston-twin ever (in fact it was faster than pretty much *any* operational prop bar the P-51H), it'll out-climb most anything other than a Bearcat and Eric 'Winkle' Brown, the man who has flown more aircraft types than anybody else (including most of the Hornet's competitors) considers it THE best-handling aircraft he ever encountered, full stop. Nice aircraft? I'd say so smile

Despite its relative obscurity, it must be considered one of the top contenders for the title of 'ultimate piston-engine fighter', IMHO.

Like others have said, without a proper theater and opponents, (the whole environment) I have little interest in this.
I'm hoping against hope that this is just the beginning, and a full WWII sim will happen at some point. Along those lines, I'm happy to hold a "see the big picture" point of view for now.
If it happens, GREAT, I'll a huge supporter. Until then I have no desire to fly a Mustang, (however beautifully modeled) in Crimea or over Nellis alongside A10's. If I really wanted a Mustang with no WWII theater, I could purchase a civilian flight sim and one of the superb P51's already offered.

If they're going to do this, I hope they jump in with both feet.
I need 190's, 109's, B17's, Channel map, trains, trucks, etc, etc, etc, etc.....

Interesting, a bit of a bolt from the blue. ROF and ED still have the same flight model coder, yes?

It's a surprising move by ED, but then why not release other aircraft to fly around in the engine? With the quality of ED's flight models recently I'll certainly pick this one up. If they do a FW 190 or BF109 will this be combat capable? What level of systems fidelity are we talking about?

Yes! And the rest of the Vietnam era aircraft. Skyraider would be awesome, as would an A-6 at the DCS level. Ah, one can dream...

Seems to me an era ripe for the picking. Thirdwire gave it a shot, but just not high enough fidelity for my taste.

Yeah nice men, the idea DCS: Vietnam with Skyraider or MiG is Totally awesome. You can have many a/c in Vietnam theatre, MiG-17, MiG-21, Phantom, Crusader, Thunderchief, Dragonfly ... A big gold mine to dig here. ED

I'm not so interested in P-51D, IL-2 1946 with patches is enough !

I don't think that has ever been the case.
