I was wondering something about the F-100 vs the Mig-19 its closest east block counterpart. Both these aircraft were the first fighters on their respective sides to achieve supersonic speed in level flight. Yet the Mig-19 would normally be considered the better of the two in air to air combat.

What are the design characteristics that make the F-100 so inferior in a turning fight and how could it have been redesigned in the development stage to make it more competitive vs its rival?

MiG has lower wingloading AND much better T/W ratio, so to compete the F-100 has to lose weight and/or get a more powerful engine. At the time a better engine probably was not an option, so cutting the weight only real option. Maybe a slightly larger wing as well?

I just went through a whole (1st version) Strike Fighters campaign with F-100. I just avoided the MiG-19s when they showed up. Bagged alot of Il-28s, MiG-17s and even a few MiG-21s. I could never catch the 19s when I tried so I would just bug out.

Just looked over the stats and working the numbers it seems like the F-100 would need an additional 68.3 square feet of wing area and an F110-GE-100 to make it mach the Mig-19's wing loading and T/W ratio.

Edit: I just copied the F-100D_68 version of my SF2V and renamed it F-100Ex. Then plugged the engine data from the F-16 into the engine slot in that now F-100Ex_DATA file and changed the pointers in the now F-100Ex.ini file. Wow! What a difference the additional thrust makes.

I can imagine your brain working as Sheldon Cooper´s. You see solution/workaround/technique where I could only see ... well nothing?

Actually I was just amazed you came up with all this tinkering, and to also make it work.
Where u learned that?
